October - Flesh Societies, Podcasting, and Eternal Life
Hello everyone! I hope you had a fun and appropriately festive October. Low key dreading the winter, but enjoying the fall while it lasts.
First up, I tackled Gloomwood's early access release! It's a moody horror game inspired by the first person stealth classics of yesteryear. Its bare reliance on the basics of stealth is particularly striking in these days of excess.
I guested on my friends' podcast TBH. We talked about the movie Liv and the Blue Bird, which is a shockingly subdued and gorgeous movie. Sené and Liv are always a joy to talk with and I think this is a fun episode.
I wrote a couple entries in the A.V. Club's official ranking of Resident Evil games. RE Remake rules.
For Safe Room, Rose and I covered a scary game in a spooky month... Luigi's Mansion! It's a real delight, a really immaculate game; we have a really goofy and fun conversation about it.
I finally got a new entry in The Angel Looking Backward (thank you to all my patreons who waited patiently for this.) It's about the indie rhythm RPG Everhood and indie games criticism in general.
Bullet Points commissioned me to write about the new horror game Scorn. It's a bit uneven, but is centered around a core set of rich and horrific images. This is one of the most ambitious things I've written in a while and I think I largely pulled it off! You should check out the whole issue but especially Edwin Evans-Thirlwell's essay about Dead Space. One of the flat out most impressive pieces of game criticism I have ever read.
In things I didn't write but was sort of involved with, I'm quoted in a Digiday piece about my former employer. The whole thing is worth reading and it's an accurate picture of the broad issues at the company. Alexander Lee was very kind and circumspect, I think he does great work.
In the last bit of self-promo, you might have heard about Musk's acquisition of Twitter. I'm still on there, but I'm kicking around a couple other things in case the ship does go down. So I'm on Cohost and Tumblr with the intention of posting and hanging out a bit more, though who knows what the future holds.
But IF you never want to get on social media, the oldest form of social media (email) will always be here for you. Hope you enjoy November and I'll catch you next time.
