November + December 2023: They Are Ending TinyLetter, This Will Be The Last Newsletter On This Platform
Bummed that nice free things continue to end. Tiny Letter was lean and nice, it served my purposes perfectly. Don't worry! If you are reading this on TinyLetter, I've exported your info so I can transfer it to a new service. So you'll get the new newsletter from wherever its new home is. If you read it on Patreon or Cohost, updates will continue as usual.
In other news, the Patreon will be even more quiet than usual as I tinker away at a secret project. The newsletter will update as normal. Here's what I was up to over the last couple months.
First up, I wrote about interconnections between Palestine's and Utah's history for the student publication Prodigal Press. This got rejected from the Salt Lake Tribune and I figured no other Utah newspaper would even touch it. Grateful it found a home at one of the true alternative voices in the state.
Since writing that, the genocide in Palestine has in no way slowed down. I wrote most of this newsletter just before the US and the UK attacked Yemen, in an attempt to halt Houthi attacks on shipments to Israel. Words fail. It feels gauche in some ways to talk about, but the fact that this is happening should not go unremarked upon in any aspect of our lives, even those seemingly disconnected.
Onto more trivial matters:
I wrote about the Xbox One's absurd marketing failures, which lead to the brand emphasizing its back catalog in contrast to every other major console manufacturer.
Finally, I talked about one particular dungeon in Baldur's Gate 3 and how it shows off the game's more modest strengths.
On the podcast side, we covered three games on The Safe Room. First up is the FMV classic Serial Experiments Lain, a thorny, multimedia drama about terrible therapists and being too online.
Next, we played Alan Wake 2 (he's still a writer). We talked for 3 hours about this truly layered horror adventure and why it managed to resonate so much with us.
Finally, we covered Resident Evil Remake, THE survival horror classic and you know. It still hits.
Behind the paywall, we discussed the found footage, mockumentary horror film Lake Mungo AND the Twilight movies lol. Really rambunctious and silly episode.
Much love to everyone and thank you all for supporting me through 2023! Many exciting and scary things for 2024 and hopefully more rage and beauty for us all.
