GW Cello News: J Robbins Basilisk tour; Nirvana on cello
Hello music fans,
Firstly, I have a fancy new indie email provider, Buttondown, which I highly recommend for musicians (especially those migrating off of Tinyletter, which shuts down Feb 29!). To celebrate, I plan on emailing occasional thoughts about music, music tech, social media, culture, and other ramblings. But in order for that not to feel spammy, here's a chance to opt-out:
Now, onto The Content!
The new J. Robbins record, Basilisk, is out! It was released on February 2nd and was awarded Bandcamp's album of the day. You can read Jesse Locke's wonderful review on their Daily publication. Get the record via Bandcamp or the official Dischord site, or of course stream it on your favorite service.
Better yet, come pick up your vinyl copy of Basilisk at a show! I'll be playing cello and guitar on the following dates, starting this Thursday in Columbus, OH:
Feb 15, Ace of Cups (Columbus, OH)
Feb 16, Beat Kitchen (Chicago, IL)
Feb 17, Grog Shop (Cleveland Heights, OH)
Feb 18, The Government Center (Pittsburgh, PA)
Feb 20, Union Pool (Brooklyn, NY)
Feb 21, No Fun (Troy, NY)
Feb 22, Deep Cuts (Medford, MA)
Feb 23, Johnny Brenda's (Philadelphia, PA)
Feb 24, Comet Ping Pong (Washington, DC)
Apr 19, DRKMTTR (Nashville, TN)
Apr 20, Planet of the Tapes (Louisville, KY -- Coliseum reunion show)
Apr 21, 123 Pleasant St (Morgantown, WV)
Next up: Nirvana on Cello! Late last year, the producer of the acclaimed music podcast Vinyl Emergency, Jim Hanke -- also a personal friend -- dreamt he would ask to use something from my album In Utero On Cello for his upcoming interview with Michael Azzerad (Michael's famous Nirvana biography Come As You Are just got an "amplified" reissue). Of course, it was just a dream, and there is no such album.
But, there was just enough time before the show aired to take the Wild Possibly-ADHD-Fueled Route and partially make dreams come true. I recorded two covers (Pennyroyal Tea and Dumb) which you can hear featured on the episode!
Will this ever result in a full Nirvana on Cello album? Who knows, but it sure was fun. Hit "reply" and let me know if you think I should keep going.
Follow @gordonwithersmusic on Instagram and TikTok for tour posts and other nonsense. I guess I am trying out Threads too. (X/Twitter can DIAF. (If you're still using it, I'm curious as to your reasoning (but also: you're wrong))).
As always, thank you for listening, reading, and being a fan of grunge muzak.
