Good Works Columbus: September 18, 2023

Welcome to the first issue of Good Works Columbus

Welcome

Hi! I’m glad you’re here. Welcome to the first issue of Good Works Columbus, a newsletter for you to find ways to help make the city of Columbus, Ohio a better place. I’ll be highlighting anything ranging from online surveys, that you can complete from the comfort of your home, to things that require you to get out of the house. If you have something that you’d like featured or have any feedback please send me a message.

Some quick housekeeping before we get started. By subscribing you’ll be getting weekly updates sent to your inbox on how to get involved in making Columbus a better place. Now that Twitter (I will not be calling it X) is a shell of its former self, I hope that I can gather these opportunities on how to get involved in one place so you don’t have to go searching for it in the app’s ruins. Lastly, I hope you can share this newsletter with a friend or two. What I liked about Twitter was the digital communities we formed there; by creating this newsletter, I hope that we can start to create a new community centered around improving Columbus.

Now, on to the newsletter.

Things you can do online

  • If you haven’t already, complete the City of Columbus Bike Plus Survey. The City of Columbus has started the planning process to improve how we bike, scooter and skate – however you choose to roll – in Columbus. They’re calling the plan “Bike Plus” – and they need your help! (5 minutes)

  • Register to vote and update your voter registration. The deadline for voter registration is October 10th for the November 7th election. (5-10 minutes)

  • Email your public comments against the oil and gas leasing nominations for Salt Fork State Park until September 25th. (10 minutes)

  • Stop Cassady Avenue road widening:

¬¬STOP CASSADY Ave. and 5th Ave. ROAD WIDENING Columbus is spending tens of millions to add traffic lanes to Cassady Ave, as well as 5th. Ave. ⋙ Studies show adding lanes actually INCREASES traffic volume. ⋘ This plan CONTRADICTS safe street design guidelines Columbus has previously adopted! Road widening and adding traffic lanes will • increase speed and lane-changing, increasing traffic crashes • increase traffic and noise • cut off curbs and make crosswalks longer • remove homes and front yards • demolish 3 apartment buildings during a housing shortage crisis IF THIS IS NOT WHAT YOU WANT, CALL CITY COUNCIL 614-645-7380 TELL THEM YOU: √ WANT the planned sidewalks, bike lanes, and street lights. X DON’T WANT the extra traffic lanes. √ Request new public meetings to discuss safer, more accessible intersection design. Use the saved funds to improve lives in the neighborhood.
