Good Works Columbus: May 13, 2024

Day Without Child Care, Green Columbus Litter Pick Up, Ride of Silence, Gaza Solidarity Ride, and more!

Intro

Hi everyone, happy Monday! Hopefully you had a chance to view the northern lights this weekend. We’ve been pretty lucky not only to get an eclipse and an aurora within a month, but extra lucky that it wasn’t cloudy for either event. There’s plenty of opportunities for bike rides this week (including a chance to ride a pedal wagon and pick up some litter) and other ways to get involved!

If you have an upcoming event or a link you’d like to share for the newsletter, feel free to send suggestions.

Things you can do in person

  • Join Habitat for Humanity this Saturday from 8:30am-2:30pm to help put some of the finishing touches on a new house. Potential tasks will include interior finishes (such as installing flooring) and/or installing exterior handrails (could include paint!)

  • TODAY: (10am-5pm at the Statehouse) Join the Care Economy Organizing Project in fighting for equitable childcare. The work of caring for our children and families is some of the most important work in our lives. Affordable, quality child care makes it possible for parents to go out and do what we do every day, knowing that the most precious people in our lives are in good hands. Yet, it’s some of the most invisible and undervalued work. It's time to invest in expanding affordable, quality child care, with living wages for the hardworking child care providers who care for and nurture our children.

Don't miss out on the Helsel Park and Big Walnut Trail open house public meeting!

The redevelopment process is beginning for Helsel Park and the extension of the Big Walnut Trail in spring 2024. Help shape the redevelopment of Helsel Park with the creation of a master plan, and the future route of the trail extension on May 14 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Barnett Community Center. Light refreshments will be provided.

After public feedback, construction documents will be created in the fall through winter 2024. The construction timeline is being determined.

  • Join Green Columbus for Green Drinks. We will be heading out to clean up our community while enjoying the convenience of the Trolley Pub. You will be provided with litter grabbers, gloves, vests, and trash bags thanks to Keep Columbus Beautiful. Registration is required as we have a maximum of 30 spots. (Only 4 spots remaining!) Once registered, we will send you a waiver and remind you of the beverage guidelines. BYOB!

  • COTA is seeking public comment on proposed changes scheduled to take place September 2, 2024. Meeting at the COTA building downtown (33 N High St.) or on Facebook Live (https://www.facebook.com/cotabus/)

Learn more about the recommended changes by joining one of our upcoming public meetings or contact COTA to give your feedback.

    Meeting dates/time: Thursday, May 16 6:00-7:00pm
    Tuesday, May 21 12:00pm-1:00pm

Things you can do online

  • An Italian Village Society questionnaire is being used to help determine how the people of Italian Village want to see Italian Village Park used after the renovations are complete.

  • Transit Columbus monthly meeting is canceled for May, but will be back on June 11th at 7:00pm at the main library. In the meantime, you can sign up for one or many working groups here!

Other Stuff

In Case You Missed It

  • The City of Columbus is modernizing its zoning code for the first time in more than 70 years. This is an opportunity for our community to “Zone In” on how we’ll grow and prosper. Sign up to view the gallery in person and visit the page to learn more.

  • LinkUS Engagement Survey (2 minutes)

We invite you to share your thoughts on LinkUS and public transportation's impact on your life and community. Your answers will be shared as part of a social media initiative to spread awareness about LinkUS and what it means for the Central Ohio region. Thank you for your participation!

  • Mark up the Vision Zero Columbus map. Have a close call walking, biking, or getting around town? Do you know a dangerous intersection that can be improved? Help identify these spots on the Vision Zero map.

  • Join us to fund abortion & build power!

Legal abortion access means nothing if patients can't afford abortion care. Join us to fundraise for Abortion Fund of Ohio—an organization that helps patients with financial and practical supports! 100% of fundraising funds patient costs—from covering the appointment itself to childcare, transportation, & travel.
