Gil's Week #202021

This week I…

  • Kept on using emacs for work, I’m getting more and more used to it. I’m even writing this newsletter on it for the first time.
  • I realise that I never talked about how I write this newsletter, so here it goes:

I use vimwiki to store it (I “backup” using a git repo) and to get it to easily from any vim instance, that way I can write quickly when I think about something or when I have a link to share so I can rememeber to add it for next week.

I write it up and then copy paste into Buttondown, this is the reason why I use Buttondown, it lets me use markdown for my newsletter, and that’s invaluable for me.

  • This week I have kept thinking about productivity, namely about how to schedule my day and how to keep my knowledge base. I am close to a good setup with org-roam, I re-created an account on newsblur so I can keep my internet consumption into one single page, which may keep it lower and more organizer. I may later switch to some sort of emacs RSS client or something else, but right now, newsblur let’s me keep it synchronized and I don’t need to get the exact url for the RSS feed.

  • Oh and I streamlined my exercise program a bit and it’s working well so far. I thought about setting a goal to doing 100 of each exercise (TBD which exercises) and so I thought about doing them everyday to keep up the progress, but you know how some days you can just do a few push ups and a few squats and the next day you may have a lot of energy? The way that I am keeping myself motivated and in progress is to simply keep track of how much I do in a given week instead of every day. I’ll check the averages later and see the progress week from week. I’m excited about this!

  • I’ve been thinking about writing a post on my working from home routine now that it’s becoming more solid, it will be great to see the evolution too.

Sound of the week

  • Cattle Decapitation - Kingdom of Tyrants

Great URLs

  • I love a good “Uses this” post, and this is a good example of one: https://michael.stapelberg.ch/posts/2020-05-23-desk-setup/
  • A good resource on keeping my knowledge management system is: https://zettelkasten.de/posts/overview/#knowledge-management
  • I’ve been meaning to watch this talk for a while and between this week and last week, I watched it 3 times, it’s a very good software engineer career talk, I highly recommend you to watch it if you’re an engineer, or planning to being one. Being Glue - By Tanya Reilly

Notes

  • This newsletter is a big longer than others, I like it! Let me know you want me to keep this up, or if it’s too much information overload.

Cheers, Gil
