The Ghoulish Times | 09.19.24
Hello and welcome to the latest issue of The Ghoulish Times. My name is Max Booth and this is my spooky newsletter.
I have exactly one hour before I have to leave the shop, so apologies in advance if this newsletter seems rushed. Actually, no, wait. No apologies in advance. There is a lot of cool shit happening right now and I do not feel bad about it!
FIRST: Our physical retail shop will be closing early today, September 19th, at 3:30pm. But don’t worry! We can still take care of all your spooky book needs via our webstore.
All weekend—and most of next weekend—I will be attending Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX. (The shop will remain open, I just won’t personally be working the desk.) I’m going to OD on movies and it’s going to be glorious. But I’ll also be working! I have a tablet loaded with manuscripts to edit between showtimes. But also! Last year, Fantastic Fest was kind enough to let us host & organize a little horror book fair during their many other fun activities, and we are pleased as spooky punch that they’ve allowed us to return this year. Not only are we returning, but we’ve also been given a much longer block of time.
On Monday, September 23, from 11am-4pm, we will be set up in the Highball selling books and other spooky merch. View the event page HERE.
And click HERE to learn more about this year’s vendors.
Also check out this fun FANGORIA article titled “Surviving and Thriving: Your Essential Fantastic Fest 2024 Guide” which had this to say about our Ghoulish Book Fair:
Join us on Monday, September 23rd, 11 am-4 pm in the Highball! Small publishing company Ghoulish Books presents a smorgasbord of ghoulish delights in The Highball. Stop by the FANGORIA table and meet our community manager Kimberly in the flesh. We'll have magazine issues and freshly baked merch hot and ready to go. (This is a non-ticketed event.)
A couple days ago, my friend Johnny Compton (The Spite House) stopped by our shop for a photoshoot with the San Antonio Express-News to promote his new book Devils Kill Devils. Much to my surprise, the paper also wanted to include a spotlight on our shop! You can read the full piece HERE.
As an extra little treat, they also took my photo, and it turned out to look pretty goddamn good imho:
Earlier this week, we revealed Betty Rocksteady’s front cover art for Lucas Mangum’s Haunted Hearts. Check it out:
For Moon Boy, adulthood is coming no matter what. Even if he spends most nights drinking forties in the cemetery with his band, even if he drops out of community college to pursue multiple women for different reasons, and even if he can still see the ghost house rise from the quarry at midnight, he can’t stop the inevitable. When his sister goes missing on opening night at Kip Creeker’s Trail of Terror, Moon Boy’s already overcomplicated life takes a frightening turn, and his grasp on reality starts to slip.
Haunted Hearts is a coming-of-age horror tale about those who fight growing up and the ghosts that haunt them.
Pre-Orders from the Ghoulish webstore before October 20th will be SIGNED & PERSONALIZED by the author. Click HERE to secure your signed copy.
ICYMI - last week Perry Meester’s The Flesh Inherent released upon the public. Reviews are stellar and we couldn’t be happier with how the novella turned out. If gay cowboys, weird alien shit, and gnarly body horror are things of your liking, then do yourself a favor and order a copy ASAP.
Danger Slater is continuing his promo offer of drawing personalized movie posters. This time, all you have to do is leave a review of his new Ghoulish novella Starlet and contact him afterward.

We have some great events lined up at our bookstore this month! Here they are…
Summer’s Last Scare: Horror Writers Bring the Heat!
September 21 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
To celebrate the end of summer, local horror writers will gather at Ghoulish Books and perform live readings of their most terrifying material. Their books will be available to purchase and have signed by each author.
Our line-up includes: Ryan C. Bradley, Celso Hurtado, John Baltisberger, R.C. Hausen, Michael Louis Dixon, R.J. Joseph, and Leticia Urieta.
September Writing Club
September 26 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Come join our monthly writing club at Ghoulish Books. This is a free event and anybody is welcome to attend.
Sometimes the easiest way to be creative is to work in the same room as other creative types. So, for two hours every month we invite you to join us at Ghoulish Books where we will have tables and chairs set out for writers to work on their latest works in progress. Please bring your own method of writing with you (laptop, notebook, etc).
Snacks & drinks will be available to purchase in the lobby.
FREE Horror Movie Night
September 28 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
Saturday Night Spookies is our monthly movie screening event! On the last Saturday every month, we host a FREE secret movie screening in our bookstore.
The movie title is always a secret until showtime. Saturday Night Spookies is typically hosted by Miguel Myers of the My Horror Confessional podcast.
Although these screenings are free, we do have limited seating, so show up earlier rather than later to reserve your spot. We also sell snacks & drinks in the lobby.
Okay I think that’s it! Goodbye!
