The Ghoulish Times | 05.28.26
Hello and welcome to the latest issue of The Ghoulish Times. My name is Max Booth and this is my free spooky newsletter about all things GHOULISH.
First, gotta get something out of the way immediately. If you live in the San Antonio area and recognize this dog, please contact me at maxboothiii@gmail.com.

I found him yesterday near the Hemisphere downtown. See my thread on Bluesky documenting our little adventure together thus far (with many more pics). It’s been…a crazy 24 hours. I’ve filled out a few forms with local rescues, but it’s tough, capacity is limited and I’m not going to fuck around with the shelters since most of them are kill shelters. I’m also not going to let some internet rando take him (several have offered but…sorry, if I don’t know you, I don’t trust you! please stop calling the shop!).
I guess I’m mostly after the actual owner of the dog right now, who can provide proof that he belongs to them…otherwise, I guess I have a new dog. I don’t know. He instantly became attached and refuses to leave my side now. I already checked to see if he’s chipped and he’s not. I’ve posted stuff about him through all the usual channels. Tomorrow I have a vet appointment to get him checked over and get him some flea preventative medication and possibly his shots.
I am pretty sure I am in denial about having a new dog.
I’ll post a longer write-up about him over on my patreon either tonight or tomorrow. Probably tomorrow. I’m so tired.
LAST MONTH IN TEXAS
Speaking of my patreon, yesterday I wrote up a personal little essay about my time in Texas soon coming to an end. There is no paywall, so anybody can access it (although I certainly wouldn’t mind more paid subscribers). Read the piece HERE.
The one thing from the post that I want to also bring up here is recently I launched a little crowdfunding campaign to help with my moving costs. If you’re unaware, I am moving from San Antonio, Texas to Minneapolis, Minnesota at the end of June. I am taking the publishing company, Ghoulish Books, with me. The S.A. bookstore will still be operated by Lori and rebranded under a different name to be announced sometime this summer. Whenever she has that information available, or the new socials launched, I’ll be sure to pass those on for all the locals who are only interested in the bookstore aspect of the company.
Anyway, moving is very expensive (so is, btw, letting a random new dog suddenly insert himself in your life at the worst possible moment). I realize this is not a shocking thing to say, but holy hell is it expensive. So. If you felt like assisting with a low-income trans writer / editor / publisher relocating to a new state, check out my ko-fi HERE. Last time I checked, my goal was currently at 69%, which has to be some kind of good sign…right?
ISSUES WITH AUTHORITY / SHIRLEY JACKSONS
Ghouls, we are so excited to share the good news that Nadia Bulkin’s Issues with Authority has been nominated for a Shirley Jackson Award!

Read the full announcement HERE, and purchase a copy of Nadia’s collection through our webstore HERE.
DON’T FORGET: GHOULISH BOOK CLUB (MAY)
Don’t forget! This upcoming Sunday at the shop (6pm) is our in-person discussion of Wife Shaped Bodies by Laura Cranehill. More details HERE.
REMINDER: PERPETUAL MOTION MACHINE DISSOLVING
I sent out a newsletter about this at the start of the month, but since we’re getting to the deadline I thought I’d better remind you: many of our older titles are going out of print at the end of May. Check out the graphic below for a full list:

If the graphic doesn’t load, those titles are ANTIOCH, BABY POWDER AND OTHER TERRIFYING SUBSTANCES, BENEATH THE SALTON SEA, BONE SAW, BORN IN BLOOD, DEAD MEN, INVASION OF THE WEIRDOS, JURASSICHRIST, LIKE JAGGED TEETH, LOST SIGNALS, LOST FILMS, LOST CONTACT, MOONFELLOWS, NIGHT FRIGHTS, NIGHT ROADS, SCANLINES, SHE WAS FOUND IN A GUITAR CASE, STANDALONE, STEALING PROPELLER HATS FROM THE DEAD, TALES FROM THE CRUST, THE FLYING NONE, THE FOREST, THE GIRL IN THE VIDEO, THE GREEN KANGAROOS, THE NIGHTLY DISEASE, THE TRAIN DERAILS IN BOSTON, THE WRITHING SKIES, TOUCH THE NIGHT, and WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING.
We have a limited amount of stock left in our webstore, with the paperback prices decently discounted. Most of them are soldout at this point, but you can still get unlimited eBooks throughout the month. You can also buy paperbacks through other online retailers (or request them through your favorite indie bookstore!). We just won't be personally restocking what's soldout in the Ghoulish webstore at this point. What's gone is gone.
Also, important to mention: the anthologies Lost Signals, Lost Films, Lost Contact, and Tales from the Crust will never be reprinted anywhere again. This month is your last chance to purchase new editions anywhere. I'm out of paperbacks already through the webstore (eBooks still available, though!), so I'd recommend clicking the Bookshop.org hyperlinks I've inserted in each title.
My own PMMP books—We Need to Do Something, Touch the Night, and The Nightly Disease—will be reprinted as Ghoulish titles later this summer. Patrons will already be familiar with the new cover art I posted last month. More news on their availability later.
Okay thanks. See ya.
