For this week, here’s an excerpt from a poem. This piece was inspired by an experience I had last summer at one of those ‘pitch back playback’ events for Jon Hopkins’ 2024 record, Ritual.

Ran [1985, dir. Akira Kurosawa]. Unforgettable images that will inspire and haunt me to the rest of my days.
Batman & Robin [1997, dir. Joel Schumacher]. Campy fun, not as horrible as the critics (and cast and crew of the film) might have you believe.
Memories of Murder [2003, dir. Bong Joon-ho]. BJH sure loves his epilogues.
Drink and Be Merry [2025, dir. Adam Volerich]. Watched this last night at the sold out kickoff to Art of Brooklyn Film Festival! Lovely and sad and somehow hopeful.

Watch Andor Season 2. Unless you haven’t seen Andor Season 1. In which case, watch Andor seasons 1 and 2. Compelling, heartrending, infuriating, all too relatable to the world we live in now. The best Star Wars media that exists.
Game Changer Season 7 has been all bangers so far, and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

If I had to pick a favorite album of the year so far, it is most likely EUSEXUA, really lightning in a bottle for how my Q1 2025 went. I even wrote about it.
What’s your top 5 of 2025 so far?
Two Saturdays ago, Erin, Kenny and I did a top to bottom of Manhattan, starting from Tiny Beach in Inwood Hill Park and ending all the way down at Whitehall Terminal. My feet ached (and still do just a little), but it was still a magical way to spend the day, seeing Manhattan island evolve from a veritable rainforest, to a ridge overlooking Harlem, to glassy superstructures, to the cute overpriced neighborhoods, back to glassy superstructures before spilling into a tragically obstructed view of Lady Liberty. The walk ended up being a kind of ‘Will Tour’ for Erin and Kenny, our route happening to cross many formative locations across my entire life, and they were very patient with me as I gushed about memories with my Papito, my family, old friends, and elementary school crushes.
We mostly hugged the Hudson on our walk, starting our morning at its waters in the upper Manhattan forests, swinging back west by the stone elephants and hippos of Riverside Park, and emerging from the city blocks again to watch a glorious sunset by Chelsea. At points, because I have walked a few of these stretches of Manhattan so many times, I would zone out into conversation (or zone out entirely) and wake up, realizing somewhere in the ballpark of 20-30 blocks had passed. When you’ve walked an island this many times in your life, I guess it becomes a kind of teleporting.
