Local Gardening Events in April 2025

Your free monthly roundup of gardening events, plant sales and green community projects, happening in Prince Edward County and the surrounding areas.

Red maple buds peek out from under a thick layer of ice following an ice storm. Blurry shades of grey are in the background. The Garden County newsletter logo is on the right side of the image.

Spring is here! At least, it was for a few days. That was nice, wasn’t it? The ice storm was a bit of a shock to the system, but the month ahead promises many days of double-digit degrees and more gardening events than can fit in a single newsletter. So there’s plenty to look forward to!

In other news, Garden County now has an official website at GardenCounty.ca 🎉 It’s somewhere to subscribe or tell me about upcoming events. More features are in the works!

On that point, the season is about to get very, very busy with gardening events in our region, so be sure to tell your friends, family, neighbours, and anyone else who will listen, about this free newsletter. Let’s get more people gardening!

🕰️ Now’s The Time

…to take a look around

Once your garden has thawed out a little, it's worth taking some time to go and check out:

  • damaged trees (for safety reasons)

  • flooded areas (for planning purposes)

  • early shoots (for the sheer joy of it)

This is especially important if it’s your first or second winter with your garden. Getting to know your outdoor space before trying to make big changes, saves a lot of effort and drowned plants.

🌳 A Quick Note on Trees

Dead or damaged trees are still a habitat for creatures that benefit our gardens so, if it’s safe to leave them standing (after pruning broken limbs), then do. They can also be a handy spot to hang bird feeders, decorations, or signs to annoy your neighbours with.

If you need more trees in your life (who doesn’t?), then here’s two great local options:

  1. Native trees and shrubs seedling fundraiser [order online]

    • Get year-round interest, privacy screens and edible berries. All $20 for 5 seedlings (12-18in tall)

    • Pick up in Picton, 9am-noon on Saturday, May 3

  1. Fruit trees and shrubs [order online]

    • Lots of fruit-bearing trees and shrubs for $25-$75 each

    • Available at Carson’s Garden & Market, near Bloomfield
