Recommendations from FF HQ

My fave read from November was Raven Leilani's Luster. It follows a 20-something who gets involved with an older man and finds herself, under odd circumstances, living at his home, forming an uneasy alliance with his wife, and a connection with his adopted daughter. It deftly engages with sex and desire (a lot of it!), racism (the MC is Black, as is the daughter), and the power dynamics inherent in the central relationship. And the writing itself jumps off the page--it's an incredible debut.
Speaking of power dynamics, I finally got around to watching Tár, and it ended up as my fave movie watched last month. Having Cate Blanchett, Noémie Merlant, and Nina Hoss all in the same movie is an absolute embarrassment of riches and they all turn in fantastic performances in this tale about a conductor's fall from grace.
