The Big Sort: 14 - Dreaming about the life she's living now

Seattle to Southworth, Washington
2019

---

We were heading to Port Orchard to stay in an A frame nestled in a forest, where the closest restaurant was a McDonald's a 2 hour walk away.

We met up near her house in Seattle to stock up on groceries before catching the ferry. I brought a giant loaf of sourdough bread that I’d cradled on the plane from San Francisco. To supplement it, we got lentils, onion, canned tomato, olives, sweet potatoes, eggs, avocado, swiss chard, butter, and not enough coffee. We sensibly insured ourselves against starvation with about 6 bottles of wine that clinked in our bags as we boarded.

From Southworth, we got a ride with Deborah, who was the only Uber driver on the island. Once we arrived, I made a fire and threw sweet potatoes onto the embers. We cracked off its charred skin and spooned out the gooey goodness as we chatted about dreams. At the time she wanted to quit her corporate job, rethink her career from scratch and move to Spain. 3 years later, she’s living the life she was dreaming about back then.
