Dutch parliament rejects minority government's third budget

Minority governments are discovering the limits of their parliamentary math. The Dutch House of Representatives rejected the finance minister's third budget, leaving the administration without a fiscal plan. Italy's prime minister balanced her 2027 books only by extracting €8 billion from the defense budget over the loud protests of her own defense minister. In Portugal, the state simply stopped trying to provide education in Marvila, sending primary students home after realizing 14 classes had no teacher. Meanwhile, a railway fire in Žilina crippled Slovakia's train network.

In more detail

Italy

Giorgetti targets pay rises and debt in 2027 budget

Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti described his 2027 budget as 'prudent', a term that covers both a new 5% tax on salary increases and the admission that national debt will rise until 2028. To keep the books roughly in line, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni extracted €8 billion in cuts from the defense budget. The savings were secured over the audible protests of her own defense and enterprise ministers.

Hungary

Former development minister detained in corruption probe

The government's anti-corruption drive has reached the inner circle of the previous administration. Former development minister Miklós Seszták was detained following bribery allegations, joining a former culture minister in custody. Legal observers suggest the next phase may involve plea bargains, which would test the ruling party's claim that the proceedings are arbitrary.

Lithuania

Fighter jets scramble as drone threat closes capital airspace

A yellow air alert in the Vilnius and Ukmergė regions temporarily grounded the capital's airport after a potential drone incursion. Fighter jets were scrambled to investigate the unidentified threat before the alert was cancelled and flights resumed. The incident coincided with a government warning to the industrial sector that it has three to five years to prepare for 'the inevitable'.

Slovakia

Fire in Žilina cripples national rail network

A fire at a technical facility in Žilina disabled key signaling equipment, causing delays and cancellations across the country's rail lines. The disruption follows an incident in Krásno nad Kysucou where passengers were instructed to exit a train and left stranded on the tracks overnight. The railway company is currently blaming third parties for the misunderstanding.
