Today's Europe news map

Romanian parliament rejects Mureșan cabinet

Governments spent Tuesday discovering the limits of their own authority. Romania's president needs a new prime minister after parliament rejected Siegfried Mureșan's cabinet. In Hungary, allegations emerged that Viktor Orbán's brother tried to intercept a Ukrainian money shipment in Austria. Spain's housing agenda survived contact with Podemos, though the government is still waiting on Junts. Britain is gathering evidence on public support for rejoining the EU. And European prosecutors arrested four people in Croatia who allegedly claimed €685,000 to repair buildings an earthquake never actually touched.

In more detail

Romania

Romanian parliament rejects Mureșan cabinet

Siegfried Mureșan’s proposed government collapsed after securing only 182 votes in parliament. President Nicușor Dan ruled out early elections and asked the parties to find a functional majority, just as S&P prepares to re-evaluate the country's credit rating. The government admits that national resources are increasingly consumed by interest payments.

Hungary

Brother of Viktor Orbán linked to Ukrainian gold convoy plot

Allegations have emerged that Áron Orbán, brother of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, attempted to arrange the interception of a Ukrainian money shipment in Austria. The head of the tax administration's criminal directorate was dismissed following the operation. The Tisza government, meanwhile, says it has inherited a 2,800 billion forint budget deficit from the previous administration.

United Kingdom

Government gathers evidence on public support for rejoining EU

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is reportedly considering a second Brexit vote and has begun gathering evidence on public opinion regarding a return to the European Union. The move comes after France and Spain expressed support for the UK rejoining the bloc. A reversal would test the electorate's appetite for another constitutional referendum.

Ukraine

Russian drone strikes Kyiv school

A Russian drone hit a school in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district where over 100 students were sheltering. The attack was part of a larger barrage of 107 drones that also struck a business center in Odesa. In response, the European Union committed €10 million to build hundreds of mobile bomb shelters and school facilities.

Croatia

European prosecutors arrest four over phantom earthquake repairs

European prosecutors arrested four people for allegedly claiming €685,000 to repair buildings in the Banija region that were never damaged by an earthquake. Investigators say the scheme targeted reconstruction funds meant for disaster recovery. Several company owners were detained after authorities uncovered the attempt to drain the earmarked funds.

Police raid doctor's living room clinic

A physician in Vitez was arrested for allegedly examining patients and issuing certificates from her house. Police discovered she had been running the makeshift clinic using the official health center stamp. Her home-office setup proved to be a little too literal.
