Issue #48 - Save The Caps
"Urging fans to join 'Save The Caps' campaign to keep Whitecaps FC in Vancouver!"
Hello!
I’m starting this issue of the newsletter with a warning - the Vancouver Whitecaps FC are under threat!
The Save The Caps campaign, led by the ever-passionate Vancouver Southsiders with the support of a number of other supporters groups such as the Vancouver Sisters, Raincity Brigade and others, is a grassroots push to keep the Whitecaps where they belong: here in Vancouver.
We’re talking about a threat to the fifty-years of history. Multiple Canadian Championships, multiple Cascadia Cups, an MLS Cup Final, and so many electric nights - whether under the dome at BC Place, the lights of Swangard Stadium, or the pitch at Empire Stadium.
We’re talking about a threat to not just a team. We’re talking about what makes Vancouver a soccer city. We’re talking about something that is greater than the eleven on the pitch, but all the memories and experiences each supporter and member of the community has made being part of the club.
And right now, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC needs us.

So, what can you do?
First, sign the petition. Join over 2100 people who believe no other Whitecaps franchise than the one here in Vancouver.
Then, make some noise. Share the campaign, print a banner, tell your friends and do whatever you can to get the word out. Each and everyone of us can make a difference.
The Supporters Groups are fighting this battle on the ground, but they can’t do it alone. The city, the province, and the league need to hear from all of us: the Whitecaps aren’t for sale, and they’re not leaving without a fight. It’s easy to feel powerless in these situations, but every signature, every repost, every conversation is a reminder that this club belongs to the fans as much as it does to anyone else.
Look, we’ve all had our frustrations with this club - me included. But losing it entirely? That’s simply not an option. The Save The Caps campaign is our chance to stand up and show that Vancouver’s soccer culture is alive and kicking. So, let’s get to work. Add your name, raise your voice, and help make sure the Whitecaps stay right here—where they’ve always been.
Here in Vancouver!
The View
Despite a definitive 3-nil Whitecaps FC victory over Sporting KC last Friday, one where the lead was established within the first thirty minutes, I find myself in a much different place as I write this issue.
As I said above, the Whitecaps FC are under threat and I genuinely find myself concern for their future in Vancouver.
Prior to this past weekend, I’ve been pragmatic in my approach to the current state of affairs. The threat of the ‘Caps leaving the City was very real, yet not one that seemed imminent. Yes the primaries behind the club were simply looking to offload a portion or all of their share, where relocation would only occur should new ownership have that prerogative.
Yet with the recent podcast episode from AFTN discussing how real the interest is from a potential ownership group in Las Vegas (approximately 5:00 mark), my view has changed considerably.
We need to act.
So if my earlier plea to join the Save The Caps campaign didn’t resonate, my hope is that it does now.
I want there to be a long future for the club here in Vancouver. One where “we can talk about Bruno” (Bruno Caicedo had himself a match on Friday in his first start). One where we can watch Brian White get opportunity after opportunity in front of the opposition net. One where Andrés Cubas continues to lead the league in tackles. Oh and one where having Andrés on the pitch means the opposition doesn’t score in league play (seriously… it’s surreal the ‘Caps have only given up goals when he’s not been on the pitch).
With the Colorado Rapids coming into town for the Whitecaps’ last home match until August, it’s important that all of us find our way to BC Place to make some noise. Join the over twenty-three thousand people who already have tickets to fill the lower bowl and show how passionate we are about this club!
So much can happen in the lead-up to the World Cup break, and so much can happen after, so we cannot rely on our support making its presence felt the next time our side takes the pitch in BC Place.

The Not So Good

Every positive engagement you can create that references the Save The Caps campaign is helpful. Use the #SaveTheCaps hashtag on social media, share your thoughts with your local politicians, engage in club activities, and use every opportunity you have to discuss how infectious being a Vancouver Whitecaps FC supporter can be. And if you’re not sure what to say, forward this newsletter on - every little step we can make to amplify the message is a good one.
The club needs us and we need the club!
