Hi! My name is Chris. And I’m a Whitecaps FC casual. 😄
More accurately, I’m a biased Vancouver-centric sports fan who happens to co-host the longest-running Vancouver Canucks podcast.
But this ain’t about the Canucks.
No, it’s about my true love - the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
Me and the Whitecaps
My first memory of the Whitecaps was going to a game at the original Empire Stadium. While I can’t remember much about the match itself, I distinctly remember enjoying the atmosphere and thinking, “One day, I’ll play for this team.”
Spoiler alert - I did not play for that team.
Despite this realization occurring to me early on, it didn’t stop me from watching the Whitecaps (and eventually the Eighty Sixers) play at BC Place or at Swangard. Every season I hopped on the bus and got myself to a few matches and cheered as loudly as a kid and teen could.
Boy oh boy, did I enjoy being a professional casual fan.
When it was announced the Whitecaps FC would be a new expansion club with Major League soccer, I got my deposit in on day one. And while I did take a season off for reasons (that I may discuss at some point), I’ve held on to the same two seats since.
The Newsletter
From 231, directly titled to represent my view of the pitch at BC Place, will be a creative outlet to share a few of my thoughts on the ‘caps each and every week. I’ll also drop in some curated community content that I find interesting - be it an article, a podcast episode, or an insightful post on r/whitecapsfc.
In other words, if you’re looking for vibes… this will be the newsletter for you.
I’ll also be tinkering with things a bit over the next few days, weeks, seasons (it’s the Whitecaps way). Don’t fret if the layout of the first few newsletter editions change frequently - much of this is new to me and in turn, new to your inbox.
So if you have feedback, I’m all ears (I think you can even reply to this to tell me)!
