Welcome to Footnotes: On Craft, Writing, and the Language Arts
I always have a great deal of thoughts about what I’ve been reading, media, writing generally; but I also have a stubbornly enduring sense of alienation that prevents me from knowing who to confidently share these thoughts with. I’m learning to accept this sense of alienation as a fact of being rather than something to be resolved. Sometimes that means making a newsletter to at least try discussing these things.
I anticipate a couple of posts per month: one a retrospective on what I’ve read recently, and the other an essay on a more specific concept. Things may be a little thicker here in December and January as I take advantage to spare time to write out the ideas that have been rattling around in my head for the last several months. The main point of this newsletter is to develop a regular practice of sharing, but there is also the subpurpose of learning to write a creative essay.
If this interests you, thank you for reading! This will never be paid. I am Frankie; I have been writing tens of thousands of words annually for 20 years; I have traditionally published nothing. I have been an editor for 15 years; I am currently an editor for Augur Magazine; I am studying to become a French-to-English translator. Please feel free to subscribe or peruse the archive as suits you. I can also be found on Bluesky and, less robustly, Instagram.
