Vegetables!
Since a couple of years ago, I have been really into gardening. Like, really really into gardening. I've successfully sprouted and grown a small avocado tree, I've grown corn and tomatoes, and kept spring onions for cooking. But this year, after moving into my own house, at 36, for the first time in my life, I started going kind of nuts.
I now have three raised garden beds full of leeks, spring onions, peas, corn, capsicum and various herbs. I also have twelve tomato plants, 29 red onions, and some nasturtium growing in buckets, strawberries, boysenberries and a big ol’ apple tree that came with the property - and that's not counting my daffodil bulbs and various other ornamental flowers and ferns. And all of this is packed tightly into my very small back yard.
Watering everything can be a bit of a pain, because for some reason the people who built this building decided that there should be a garden at the back of the building, but the outdoor tap is at the front. This means I have to run a garden hose through my bedroom window, all the way through the house, and out the back door. Thankfully my house is also very small, but it's still a hassle. But I put up with it because the alternative is not having plants at all, or watering them with a watering can that I fill up from the kitchen sink, which is worse.
Not long after I moved in here, my mum gave me a compost bin to put my food waste and other compostable items in, and that's going great. The bin itself is quite old and kinda falling apart though, so I am hoping to get a nice new one sometime in 2023. Then I can start actually using my own compost on my garden, instead of buying it.
People say container gardening is quite difficult, but I guess I just have a green thumb because I have had almost zero trouble doing it. That said I would prefer not to have to, but like I said before, my yard is very small. I am going to try to get at least two more raised garden beds squeezed in for the next growing season, and that should make things a bit easier.
Anyway, sorry that this post wasn't about videogames or my fiction stuff! I just really wanted to share a bit about what I get up to when I'm not sleeping, writing or playing games. If you'd like to see more stuff like this from me, please leave a comment or flick me a message on social media - all my links are at the bottom of the page.
Ka kite anō au i a koe! See you all again soon! 💚
