Spotify Wrapped 2022

As someone who is terminally online, I feel like I would be remiss if I didn’t post my Spotify Wrapped roundup in as many places as I possibly can. I’ve shared some of this a few places on social media a week or so ago, but I wanted to take a little bit more of an in-depth look at some of these stats, so you’re getting it in your inbox!

I’m going to break down the different sections a little bit because there are a couple of kind of surprising things that popped up for me. The first of which is seeing stellar* sneak into my top five artists for the year. I mean, they are a favourite for me, but I never would have considered them in my top five. The rest of this list is pretty well bang-on though.

I would honestly have been shocked if Taylor Swift was not my number one artist, I love her so much! But I was taken by surprise when I saw that I was in the top one percent of listeners this year. I guess they can’t revoke my TS fan card yet!

My top five songs felt a bit random, but I think I should have expected that considering that when I am listening to music, it’s either a single album from start to finish, or it’s my big playlist (if you’re interested you can find it here) with practically every song I can think of that I like and I’m just at the mercy of the shuffle algorithm. That said, the top four at least are absolute bangers and if you’ve never heard them before, you really ought to check them out.

The podcast section (below) was… a bit of a bummer if I’m honest. The top four out of the five are all now defunct, after the website Fanbyte laid off a ton of their staff earlier this year and pivoted to ‘videogame guides only’. I will miss all of those podcasts dearly, and I’m always looking out to see where some of the people that made them so awesome will pop up next. Shouts out to ‘Materia Possessions’ and ‘If You’re Driving Close Your Eyes’, where Imran Khan, Nerium Strom, Andrea Shearon, John Warren, Nicholas Grayson, LB Hunktears, Michael Higham and others have ended up. I expect Queens of the Drone Age (tech journalism )and/or Everything Is Real (unhinged but in the good way) to fill one or two of the top spots next year - both of which I highly recommend, along with my fifth place entry ‘What the Folklore’ if you like a bit of chaos and fairytales in your life.

I feel like this last one is a bit of a cheat, because I listen to all my podcasts on Spotify (except for Materia Possessions, which isn’t on there yet lol) so I feel like, of course I’m going to have a higher amount of listening-hours than a lot of people who use Spotify - it would be interesting if they could break this number down into minutes spent listening to music versus minutes spent listening to podcasts, rather than lumping them all together.

So that’s it, that’s my Spotify Wrapped breakdown for 2022! This was a lot of fun to put together.

I hope you liked this post, and as always you can leave a comment on Substack or hit me up on social media through the links at the bottom of the page - tell me what you liked, what you didn’t like, or just say hello! And if you’re not already, consider subscribing - it’s free and gives me the good brain chemicals.

And lastly, please consider supporting me with either a paid subscription of NZ$5 per month (or the much cheaper NZ$30 per year!), or buying me a bottle or two of sugar-free, caffeine-free Coke by tipping me on Ko-fi or Paypal. I’ll love you forever if you do!

Thanks so much for reading! Please feel free to hit me up on all the social platforms at the links at the bottom of the page.

On that note, I just want to mention that I did have a Hive account for a little while, but for my own security and safety I have decided to deactivate that for now - I may come back to it later, I may not. But I’m still everywhere else in the links below! Thanks again.

Ka kite anō au i a koe. I’ll talk to you all again soon. 💚
