Surveilled — Goodbye for now 👋
Surveilled is taking a break
It’s an understatement to say that 2020 has been a challenging year. Apart from the pandemic that has affected everyone, my family and I also moved countries and I embarked on an entirely new professional challenge, which turns out to have a higher workload than before.
Because of the prolonged lockdown in Kuala Lumpur that has shut schools since early October, forcing us to look after the kids full-time, the number of available hours in a day has also dwindled. You’ve already seen the result, the newsletter’s frequency has been less regular than it should have been.
Because of these two facts, together with a busy 2021 ahead, the newsletter will go on hiatus for a while. I’m not sure for how long and in what format it will ever come back, hopefully that’ll become clearer as we go along. A break is probably a good thing too from a creative aspect, I haven’t really been happy with the format of the newsletter for a while.
Most importantly, I wanted to thank all of you for subscribing and reading for 65 issues. Writing the newsletter scratched an itch for me and it has been a great tool for learning and self-improvement.
If you’re particularly keen on the subject matter, I recommend two other newsletters that I tend to follow very closely. The first is Benedict Evans’ Newsletter, which, although broader in scope, tends to cover surveillance capitalism quite often, even if Evans’ views often run at least somewhat counter to mine. The second is Casey Newton’s Platformer, which has comprehensive coverage of pretty much the same topics that Surveilled covers. Both write far more regularly than I did, so you won’t be starved for content.
Thanks again, stay safe and have a great 2021.
