Four Things - October 2025
Eric Hobsbawm. Nerves. Nicola Cruz. $300m.
Ahoy!
I mangled some DNS settings in the newsletter that led to several failed replies to last month's Things.
Sorry! Should be fixed now 🤞.
1 / Reading
Enjoyed reading Eric Hobsbawm's phenomenal series on "the long 19th century" this month:
Am presently halfway through his history of "the short 20th century"—The Age of Extremes: A History of the World, 1914-1991—which completes an immersive quartet.
In my lifetime, I recall feeling that humanity could rise from the descent into barbarism that defined the 20th century.
That statesmen and stateswomen could usher in an enlightened approach to solving global problems.
That reason and rationality would return to the fore.
Alas, that naïve sentiment is a quaint memory.
The sirens of the abyss sing.
C'est l'appel du vide.
2 / Building
A few things ...
- ... feeling in my right arm after a bodacious wipeout while surfing back in July that crunched my neck and led to a C6 radiculopathy
- ... a new website—and life—for Portico; very excited about this
- ... Bits! In an effort to eschew social media and revivify the ol' web, I've started posting quick thoughts on a Bear Blog (bits.caseyjr.org)
3 / Listening
Returned to Nicola Cruz's Boiler Room Tulum set a few times this month.
Don't know if Andean house is a thing, but me gusta.
