Open Google Maps, switch to satellite, and go to Rafah. As of this weekend you can. Google quietly replaced its Gaza tiles with imagery from as recently as June 2026, and the internet spent Sunday panning across it.

That took a while. From 1997 to 2020, US law capped commercial satellite imagery of Israel and the Palestinian territories at two meters per pixel. Gaza was a blur on every map app through three wars while Seattle was sharp enough to count cars. The cap lifted, the sharpness arrived, and this is what it shows. (NOAA on the 1997 limit; 2020 notice lifting it)
The UN’s satellite unit puts the damage at 82% of all structures in the Strip, just over 200,000 buildings, and counts 134,422 of them destroyed outright, more than half of everything that stood before the war. From a drone it stops being a percentage. (UNOSAT; UN News, Aug 13, 2026)
Gaza City, five days into the October 2025 ceasefire. Sky News, Oct 16, 2025.
I wanted to know whether the worst-hit cities of the Second World War looked like this. They did.
| People | Share destroyed | How long | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warsaw, 1939–45 | 1.3M | 85–90% | six years; nearly half of it demolished after the fighting stopped |
| Hamburg, 1943 | 1.7M | 75% | one week |
| Cologne, 1940–45 | 0.8M | 61% | five years; 262 raids |
| Dresden, 1945 | 0.6M | 59% | two nights |
| Berlin, 1940–45 | 4.3M | 33% | five years; 314 raids, then the ground battle |
| Gaza Strip, 2023–26 | 2.1M | 82% damaged, over half destroyed | three years, still rising |
German cities: RAF estimates of built-up area destroyed (table). Warsaw: buildings destroyed by January 1945. Raid counts: Cologne, Berlin. Populations are 1939 census figures. Gaza: UNOSAT, structures damaged and destroyed, June 2026.
Hamburg had about 1.7M people in 1939. Gaza had 2.1M in 2023, more people in half the space. Operation Gomorrah ran eight days and seven nights in July 1943 and killed somewhere between 34,000 and 40,000; a million people left the city that week. Gaza’s three years have killed 74,000 by the Gaza health ministry’s count, the only running tally there is; the UN uses it, and Israel has never published its own. 1.9M people are displaced. Hamburg’s happened in a week. Gaza’s has run three years, and more than 1,100 people have been killed here since the October 2025 ceasefire. (Hamburg; Gaza · Ground Truth)

Rafah, the week of the January 2025 ceasefire. Guardian, Jan 21, 2025. Destroyed structures rose again after this was shot.
The number of destroyed buildings kept climbing after the guns stopped too. The UN says destroyed structures rose 9% after the October 2025 ceasefire, and Al Jazeera’s satellite unit found demolitions in Shujayea, Tuffah and Rafah through mid-December 2025, inside the 58% of the Strip Israel holds behind the yellow line. The IDF says those demolitions fall within the ceasefire and answer active threats, mostly tunnels under buildings and risks to its troops. There’s a Gaza tab at the top of this site, updated daily, and in 213 of these notes I’ve never written about it. The map doesn’t need me to. (UN News; Al Jazeera Sanad, Dec 15, 2025)
The UN Development Programme ran the rubble clearance after the 2009, 2014 and 2021 wars: 2.8M tonnes, all three combined. This war has left 61M tonnes. The agency’s best case for clearing most of it is seven years, and in August 2026 the UN said its partners still lacked the permissions and equipment to remove the unexploded ordnance inside it. Tuesday Ends With No Answer From Washington Through Doha
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said he expected a formal US reply Tuesday to Iran’s seven-point ceasefire proposal, carried by Qatari mediators, and left New York without one. A US official said any deal has to address the nuclear file, where “the sides still remain apart on the timing.” Trump, who rejected the paper last week, said “it’s going to go pretty quickly” and repeated that he offered nothing in return. The IRGC spent the day on an open letter telling American voters the administration “must be changed,” five weeks before the midterms.
| War: Day 214 · began Feb 28, 2026 |
| Channel: Qatar only · no direct US–Iran meeting planned |
| Iran’s paper: Seven points, unmodified · tied to June’s memorandum terms |
| Washington, Monday: Trump — “I offered them NOTHING!” |
| Tehran, Tuesday: IRGC open letter to US voters — the administration “must be changed” |
| Overnight: Unknown projectile struck a vessel entering the strait · fire out, crew unhurt |
| Rial: 2.5 million to the dollar Tuesday, from 2.2 million on Sep 2 |
| Still in force: The US naval blockade of Iranian oil exports |
Qatari Gas Tankers Cross Hormuz Again After A Blank August
Several Qatar-linked LNG carriers transited the strait in September after none were visible in August, and regional oil exports averaged 16.3 million barrels a day — the most since the war opened, still 3.2 million short of February’s 19.5 million. Italy’s Adriatic LNG terminal has missed 35 cargoes since April and sourced 23 replacements, mostly American.
The Long End Rose Again Tuesday; Only The 2-Year Eased
Treasury’s Tuesday close put the 10-year at 5.26% and the 30-year at 5.59%, each up two basis points from Monday, when the 10-year reached a 19-year high; the 2-year slipped three to 4.89%. Stocks finished lower after the Conference Board’s consumer confidence index fell to a 12-year low.
Jet Drones Fly Above What Kyiv Can Shoot At
Overnight strikes wounded one person in Kyiv and eight in Odesa, where Moscow said it hit port infrastructure and drone plants while Ukrainian officials counted damaged apartment blocks and public transport. Ground-based guns cannot reach the jet-powered drones, and the Patriot interceptors that answer ballistic missiles are scarce, with US stocks drawn down by the Iran war.
Ebola Deaths Pass 3,700 As North Kivu Climbs
The Bundibugyo outbreak is past 130 days across seven provinces, with cases down 26% in Ituri and 15% in Haut-Uele over the last three weeks and up 73% in North Kivu. A third of new infections surface only after someone has died at home, and the fatality rate runs above 60% in children under five.
Fifth Arrest In The Chelan Hills Fire; One Suspect Still Out
Douglas County deputies and US marshals have five people in custody over the Jul 4 fire, which investigators trace to Roman candles fired from a moving truck during a countywide burn ban near U.S. 97. It burned more than 10,000 acres, destroyed over 100 structures, killed a 69-year-old resident and injured six firefighters; two defendants have pleaded not guilty ahead of Nov 17 trials.
Kraken Open Thursday In Calgary With Five Skaters Under 24
Seattle’s opening-night roster carries five players under 24, the most in the club’s six seasons, with Jake O’Brien week-to-week and Mackie Samoskevich day-to-day on injured reserve. The puck drops Oct 1 at the Saddledome, in the Flames’ last season there.
