Sending the Metal
Day 216. Two Georges hold the Arabian Sea, and a Teddy is on his way.
The George H.W. Bush and George Washington carrier groups are already on station. The Theodore Roosevelt left San Diego on Sunday, and a day behind it came the Makin Island and two more ships carrying about 2,200 Marines and sailors of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. It’s a landing force that brings its own stealth jets. (USNI News, Sep 28, 2026; USNI News, Sep 29, 2026)
The metal already out there isn’t small. The Naval Institute’s tracker names 26 American hulls between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean, 16 of them in the Arabian Sea, on the doorstep of a strait that carried a fifth of the world’s oil before the war. The Roosevelt’s four escorts add roughly 400 missile tubes. The ships named in USNI’s September 28 regional tracker are drawn to scale below. (USNI fleet tracker; EIA; The War Zone)

Every hull the US Naval Institute’s fleet tracker named in these waters on Sep 28, 2026, plus the eight that left San Diego that week, at one scale: a carrier runs 1,092 feet, a destroyer about 505. Submarines and replenishment ships aren’t included in this graphic. Sources: USNI fleet tracker; The War Zone; AP.
If nobody goes home when the Roosevelt arrives, three American carriers will be working the same theater. That happened for eight days in spring 2026, and it was the first time since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. (Al Jazeera, Apr 24, 2026; The War Zone, May 4, 2026)
The unofficial word is “options.” On the record, the Roosevelt is expected to relieve a carrier that’s already there, and a Navy official called the Marines’ sailing a “scheduled deployment.” The Jerusalem Post, reporting the deployment from an unnamed US official, describes the result as “a wider range of options for potential action against Iran.” Arrival estimates differ, so the timing of any overlap remains uncertain. So the Navy is sending a 100,000-ton option with more combat aircraft on its deck than many national air forces own. (Jerusalem Post)
Iran brought a seven-day roadmap to the United Nations: the blockade of its ports lifts, the frozen money moves, and on day seven the strait reopens and the talking starts. Washington’s official answer went back through the mediators and hasn’t been made public. The answer anyone can see is a third carrier and a landing force. In the strait on Thursday, a tanker was burning, hit by a projectile nobody has claimed. (Al Jazeera, Sep 26, 2026; AP via Arab News; UKMTO via Arab Times)
The timing is the tell. TIME asked Trump whether he’d ramp up the bombing after the midterms. “Possible,” he said. And the buildup itself arrived as a leak: at least five outlets on Thursday, every one of them citing officials who wouldn’t be named. You don’t have to trust the messenger to read the message. When Washington wants Tehran to see something, it prints it. Tehran does the same; three senior Iranian officials told Reuters their commanders are reviewing a longer target list. The story is the message. The carrier is the underline. (TIME; AP; Bloomberg; Al Jazeera via Newsquawk; Reuters via Cyprus Mail)

The line is the customary route, not a track; neither group has a published position. About 11,000 nautical miles at a steady 16 to 20 knots is roughly 23 to 29 days of uninterrupted sailing. Illustrative sailing time, not an arrival estimate: stops and operations can extend the transit. Sources: USNI News; The War Zone.
Teddy Roosevelt’s advice was to speak softly and carry a big stick. The ship that bears his name is nicknamed the Big Stick, and it’s crossing the Pacific on behalf of a president who has never once tried speaking softly.
14,000 Washingtonians Lose Apple Health Coverage
Coverage ended October 1 for lawfully present immigrants without green cards — refugees, asylees, trafficking survivors, Afghan interpreters who worked alongside US troops — under the eligibility rewrite in HR1, and the state expects most of them to end up uninsured because the same law bars them from subsidized marketplace plans in 2027. Ryan Moran, who runs the Health Care Authority, framed the cost as what happens when the emergency department becomes the only door. Nine states and the District account for roughly 281,000 people losing coverage on the same day.
Both Capitals Agree On The Steps. They Can’t Agree On The Order.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi carried Washington’s written reply into the Sep 30 cabinet meeting and President Masoud Pezeshkian answered with a condition rather than a decision: “The agreement must now be based on a win-win strategy.” An official briefed on the Qatari-mediated proximity talks in New York told the AP that the two sides largely agree on which steps are needed and disagree only on the sequence — Tehran wants the naval blockade lifted and the strait reopened inside seven days, Washington wants the nuclear file moving alongside the rest rather than behind it — while Trump, asked what follows, said he doesn’t think there could ever be peace with Iran and pointed past the November midterms. The strait isn’t waiting on the paperwork: three ships were struck Sep 29, and IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi supplied the line the diplomacy leaves out — “We have been hitting small ships and preventing them from passing for a long time, but America does not respond.”

A 12th Combatant Command, Built For Machines That Fight
At Quantico on Sep 30, in front of about 600 hand-picked sergeants and captains, Pete Hegseth said the department will stand up a four-star Autonomous Warfare Command with service-like authorities by Oct 1, 2027, preceded by an interim effort called Project Agincourt. A study group named Project Meridian — Palmer Luckey, Elon Musk and Newt Gingrich — has four months to report which domains the US should aim at next; the same speech cut general and flag officer billets by 20%.
Lula And Flávio Bolsonaro Go Into Sunday Dead Even
Quaest’s runoff simulation has them tied at 42% apiece; Datafolha reads 47–45 and AtlasIntel 47.7–47.4, all of it inside the margin. Brazilians vote Oct 4 for the presidency, all 513 Chamber seats, 54 Senate seats and 27 governorships, with a runoff booked for Oct 25 — every presidential race since 2002 has needed one.
Stocks Recover Into The Close; Micron Gains 3%
US stocks recovered from early losses as Treasury yields retreated: the S&P 500 closed up 0.20%, with the Dow and Nasdaq each up 0.04%. Micron gained 3% after its earnings report. The company reported quarterly revenue of $54.23B and adjusted earnings of $33.42 a share. Weekly jobless claims came in at 197,000, while ISM’s manufacturing index eased to 54.5. Friday brings the government’s payrolls report.
Kraken Open With A 6–1 Win In Calgary
Seattle beat Calgary 6–1 in the season opener. Vince Dunn had a goal and two assists, Jared McCann supplied three assists, and Joey Daccord made 24 saves. The Kraken visit Edmonton on Saturday before their October 4 home opener against Calgary. The Seahawks, 2–1, host the Chargers Oct 4 at 1:25 PM PT, and the Huskies, 3–1, visit No. 18 USC Oct 3 at 4:30 PM PT on NBC.
Pakistani Jets Hit Kunar And Helmand; The Counts Don’t Agree
Kabul says nine people were killed and 11 hurt on Sep 30 and calls it aggression; Islamabad says it killed 22 militants on credible intelligence, and Reuters could verify neither figure. The strikes close roughly three months of quiet on a border that saw its worst fighting in years in February, and follow an attack last month on a Pakistani police facility that killed 24.
