$5,000
The president keeps coming back to 1929.
Donald Trump’s $5,000 payment promise and 1929 warning · October 3, 2026. Source: Dialogue Works, 39:51–41:04.
Trump keeps returning to Herbert Hoover. In his July 2 CNBC interview, he said, “I don’t want to be a president with a depression on his resume,” and repeatedly named Hoover as the president he doesn’t want to become. Interview transcript.
Hoover was a Republican, with Republican majorities in both chambers when the Depression began. House history. Banking panics and Federal Reserve mistakes helped deepen the collapse. Congressional party control alone doesn’t explain what happened. Federal Reserve history.
Now Trump promises every adult citizen $5,000 if Republicans keep the House and Senate. Elect Democrats, he says, and the result will be “an economic depression much like 1929.” His own term isn’t on November’s ballot. Oct 3 video.
Five thousand dollars would matter to plenty of households. The appeal doesn’t need explaining.
Read alongside the Hoover remarks, the warning sounds to me like an attempt to assign responsibility for a possible collapse before it happens. He’s named the presidential reputation he wants to avoid. The new clip points to higher taxes, without explaining which tax changes would produce the disaster he’s forecasting.
Two Tankers Hit Near Hormuz; The US Keeps Adding Forces
United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported two tankers hit by unidentified projectiles Friday and early Saturday. One had a small fire and blackout before resuming its voyage; the other was struck east of Oman, with no casualties or environmental damage reported. Tehran continues to restrict commercial passage while Washington blockades Iranian ports and sends more ships toward the region. A US official told Al Jazeera the Theodore Roosevelt strike group left San Diego Sep 27, followed Sep 28 by the Makin Island group carrying more than 2,000 Marines.

Ansarallah Claims A Riyadh Aramco Strike After Sanaa Airstrikes
Ansarallah says it attacked a Saudi Aramco facility in Riyadh with ballistic missiles and drones Saturday, in response to Saudi-led strikes on Sanaa and other provinces. A Reuters witness saw a large plume of smoke and fire near the site. Saudi authorities and Aramco hadn’t confirmed an attack when Reuters published; the witness account establishes the fire, not who caused it or what was damaged.
Saudi Planners Weigh Bab El-Mandeb; Washington Declines Airstrikes
An operation to retake the strait Ansarallah seized this year could mobilize more than 100,000 Yemeni troops, officials told Reuters, with launch estimates running from within a week to after the November midterms. Washington is supplying intelligence and targeting support but has turned down Mohammed bin Salman’s requests for US airstrikes. A Pakistani official put 30,000 to 40,000 Pakistani troops in the kingdom for its defense; Islamabad hasn’t decided to send them into Yemen to fight.
Three Accounts Put Federal Troops Back At Mekelle’s Airport
Ethiopian federal troops have retaken Mekelle’s Alula Aba Nega Airport, three people told Reuters Saturday, advancing beyond the allied militia’s earlier claim. A resident also reported gunfire outside the city center; a person close to the TPLF said government troops and militias had encircled Mekelle. Reuters still couldn’t independently verify the accounts, and the TPLF wasn’t available for comment. Opposition forces seized the airport Sep 23. Addis Ababa has cut ties with Eritrea, alleging support for the opposition that Eritrea denies.
About 11,000 Washingtonians Lose Apple Health Eligibility
Refugees, humanitarian asylees, trafficking survivors and most lawfully present immigrants without green cards lost Medicaid eligibility Oct 1 under HR1, affecting about 11,000 Washingtonians by the Health Care Authority’s revised estimate. A court order preserves coverage for more than 800 people. HCA director Ryan Moran said the worry is the emergency department becoming their sole access to care. The law also bars the affected immigrants from government-subsidized health plans for 2027.
Seven Arrests Made One Sheriff’s Office Eligible For $14.6M
Miami-Dade made seven immigration arrests between April and June and became eligible for $14.565M in federal reimbursement, the Wall Street Journal reported. Dividing those figures gives about $2.08M an arrest; that isn’t a payment rate or proof the county received the money. DHS’s program reimburses eligible officers’ salaries and benefits and offers performance awards. A West Virginia sheriff whose department detained two people and received more than $137,000 called signing up “a no-brainer.”
