Already in Orbit

Day 204. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said Monday that the United States already has “on-orbit space control weapons.” Asked to elaborate, he answered, “No.” He explained that the phrase had been carefully chosen, then described the need to protect American space capabilities against threats from other countries. The money behind classified space programs is poised to grow sharply. Space Force’s FY2027 budget request includes $17.33B for classified research and development, up from $6.56B in the FY2026 column of the same table. That’s a proposed increase of 164%. About 43% of its requested R&D funding sits under the label “Classified Programs.” The table doesn’t identify the individual projects or connect that increase to the weapons Meink described. Meink’s security argument deserves consideration. A military that depends on satellites needs ways to protect them. Revealing a weapon’s capabilities could help an adversary defeat it. But that leaves a substantial part of the discussion outside the engineering: what Washington intends these weapons to accomplish, what limits govern their use, and how another country might interpret an action described here as defensive.

The public has now been told that American weapons are already in orbit. It deserves an explanation of what would justify using them, and how Washington intends to keep a confrontation there from becoming a wider war. Those questions shouldn’t have to wait for the first use.
