From the Editor

Day 161. For decades, Saudi Arabia bought American weapons and treated American power as its final defense. Friday it added two more names. Under the Mecca agreement, an attack on Saudi Arabia, Türkiye or Pakistan will be treated as an attack on all three. When you sign a pact, who do you envision fighting?

Riyadh won’t say. It insists the pact isn’t a military axis, isn’t nuclear and doesn’t replace existing partnerships. It doesn’t have to replace Washington to send Washington a message. Pakistan has already moved 8,000 troops, a fighter squadron and air defenses into the kingdom. Türkiye offers defense technology and industrial capacity. Those are capabilities, not communiqués.

The United States remains Saudi Arabia’s most powerful security partner. But exclusivity ends before dependence does. Riyadh has spent this war watching Washington pause, resume and redefine its campaign while attacks reached Saudi infrastructure.

Washington still fills most of the glass. Riyadh just added two more fingers.

US Payrolls Fall 23,000 in July, First Drop in Months; Futures Rise Anyway

Employers shed a net 23,000 jobs in July, the first monthly decline since winter and a wide miss against the 83,000 gain economists had forecast. The louder signal sat in the back pages: the Labor Department shaved a combined 103,000 from May and June, quietly reworking a year that had read as steady. Futures rose and Treasury yields fell as traders wagered a softening labor market nudges the Fed toward a September cut.

Iran Weighs a Hormuz Toll as Shippers Appeal to the UN

A bill before Iran’s National Security Commission would bar US- and Israeli-linked vessels from the strait and charge everyone else a transit fee until Tehran is compensated for war damage; the White House has rejected it. Eight shipping associations petitioned the UN to oppose any tolls, warning the cost lands on consumers, even as Iran and Oman keep shaping a commercial-traffic framework that would not by itself reopen the waterway.

Russian-Crude Buyers Brace for a Saturday Tariff Trigger

Trump’s threatened 100% tariffs on the top five importers of Russian oil—China and India chief among them—trigger Aug. 8 absent a Ukraine ceasefire. The Senate’s Graham Act, passed 86–12, hands the White House the authority; Moscow signals no shift and presses its strikes on Ukrainian cities.

Gaza’s Disarmament Deal Hangs on a Single Question of Order

Hamas and allied factions signed a document that gives negotiators 14 days to draft the actual disarmament roadmap, but the sequence is unresolved: the US-led Board of Peace says Israeli forces pull back only after Hamas fully disarms, while Hamas says it will not decommission until Israel withdraws.

Marine Air Scrubs Seattle’s Skies; Spokane’s Fires Grind On

A stronger marine push cleared wildfire smoke from Puget Sound heading into the weekend, with highs in the upper 70s and clean air forecast west of the Cascades into midweek. East of the mountains it is the reverse: fires around Spokane have burned hundreds of structures and are still active.

Tigers Bury Seattle 11–0 a Night After the M’s Bounced Back

Detroit shut out the Mariners at T-Mobile Park on Thursday, 11–0, a night after Seattle had answered an earlier blanking with a 4–2 win. The rout gives Detroit the series win. Things don’t get any easier tonight: the Rays are in town for three.
