The First 8 Months
Now that Font Proofer has launched, I’m excited to resume this newsletter with occasional updates about the project—from new features, to what I’m working on, to a showcase of recently-released typefaces made with the tool. And maybe some tips & tricks!
8K Proofs
Since the launch in February, it’s been incredible to see who is using Font Proofer and what they’re creating. It has been adopted by veteran type designers, students, hobbyists, type directors, teachers, and font engineers, across 40 countries! Over 8 thousand proofs have been exported since launch. But beyond any metric, it’s been a joy to meet so many of you over email, Zoom, and in person. I make this tool for you.
New features!
I’ve been busy adding features—mostly based on requests from folks like you! In case you missed it, here are recent highlights:
- ↕️ Sort font styles automatically! This much-requested feature lets you sort by Weight, Slant Angle, Version, Axis Value, and 20 other attributes. This is the most powerful set of sorting features I’ve seen in any software, and it makes comparing font styles much faster. The tutorial shows how it can help you:
- 🌏 The new Language design attribute lets you activate localized glyph variants from a font’s
loclOpenType feature.
- ✨ OpenType Features: There’s a new option to turn on all default features (ex: liga, calt). You can still turn on other features in addition to the defaults.

- 📂 Drag and drop a folder to add all of its font binaries to a proof—including those in its subfolders! Finds font files up to 4 subfolders deep.

- 🔠 Glyph Grid layout: Control exactly which metric lines to show, and align your glyphs like lines of text (center, left, right, or justified).

See more of what’s new on the 🗓 Version History page.
What I’m working on:
I’m making steady progress on the roadmap! Here are a few of the features I’ll be releasing in the coming months:
- 👥 Team and Annual Plans: I know many of you prefer to pay for tools on a yearly basis rather than monthly, and that will soon be possible (with a discount included). Teams, classes, and groups will also be able to have one person pay for the whole group, allowing members to sign up easily without a payment method.
- 🔠 Glyph Grid layout: I’ve been rewriting Glyph Grid from the ground up, adding tons of requested features. The new version is also dramatically faster. I tested it yesterday on a font with 21 thousand glyphs, and it exported a 1,200 page PDF in 4.5 seconds. 😳 The old version takes 34 seconds! This speed is an important step toward a live visual preview.
- 💤 Compare every glyph in multiple font styles with the Glyph Grid layout. I’ve received so many requests for this, and I can’t wait to unveil my solution. It’s the next killer feature.
- 📄 Link to a text document file for any section’s content.
I’d love to hear what features are important to you!
Made with Font Proofer
I’m in awe of what Font Proofer users are creating. If you’ve made something with Font Proofer, let me know—I’d love to celebrate your hard work!
