New Font Smell
I made this.
You ever look up and realize it has been five months? That Fever Ray album I hinted at last newsletter is out, which is the thing that made go "oh shit, it's been a long time. Anyway, that album SLAPS. Probably don't play it at your job or whatever.
I don't really know what to say. It's sad and scary out there, but I still want you to see the cool shit that I found. Silly little posts are the last defense against total nihilism. Take care of each other.
Anyway here are some newer fonts I like.
DT Samurai, by Dilly Type ($12)
Image via Dilly Type.
The Official Description
"DT Samurai is a tall and slender sans serif typeface inspired by the visual characteristics of Genndy Tartakovsky's highly-stylistised, martial arts-influenced animated series 'Samurai Jack'. DT Samurai is composed of high contrast, tapered strokes to emulate the use of shapes in the animation. The height represents Samurai Jack's tall, straight stature while the asymmetry of certain glyphs like A/ and M/ illustrate his swift movements and the shape of his katana. P.S. This font or foundry is in no way affiliated with 'Samurai Jack'. "
Taylor's notes: Sometimes a font knows its inspiration and just goes ALL the way in. This is inspired by Samurai Jack (which also slaps and was, uh, formative for me), it makes absolutely no secret of it, and it's $12. What more could you ask for? I love the little tilt of the capital A, and the slight taper on the E and L.

Baustraße, by FANTASIA Type ($35)
Image via Future Fonts.
The Official Description
"Baustraße is a typeface in dialogue with the history of the production and dissemination of the Bauhaus typography. Rather than being conceived as a revival project linked to the experiments conducted in particular by Herbert Bayer in the Dessau school in the mid-Twenties, the typeface is a hybrid of the numerous Bauhaus style designs that emerged between the Sixties and Nineties, in the years of photocomposition and early desktop publishing.
A century after the birth of Bauhaus, Baustraße attempts to reflect on the birth of a style, its canonization and its diffusion into the real world. Therefore, Baustraße is a design that seeks the spirit of Bauhaus outside the ‘haus’ and in the ‘straße’."
Taylor's notes: I include the official descriptions in here because they function as little museum plaques and are generally more insightful than whatever the hell I was thinking. Which in this case was, "This font was born to sell beige computers and CRTs." Very pleasing curves and inktraps (the nerd term for stuff like that little hook under the a).

ED Bathurst, by Eko Setiawan (starts at $11.90)
Image via YouWorkForThem.
The Official Description
"ED Bathurst is a modern classic blackletter style supported with multilingual character and ligature features. This font is perfect for your design needs such as poster design, logo design, branding, apparel, book, magazine, etc."
Taylor's notes: I keep seeing blackletter fonts resurface in interesting ways, and this is one I would actually consider getting tattooed on myself. Stern, yet flowy. Just the right amount of decorative flourishes. Maybe those nuns and monks were onto something!
