Come with me... and you'll be... in a world of OSHA violations...

Request 039 — 2/8/2026

Debí Tirar Más Fotos takes a different meaning

It’s Sunday, happy foiaday!

Last night, I published a three-request email, requesting for a fun variety of records: deets about the National Weather Service’s use of social media, FCC complaints for the Olympic opening games, and documentation about Chicago’s mayor, Brandon Johnson, and his room of gifts in city hall.

I hope everyone watched the Benito Bowl tonight — I genuinely loved it, and I think it topped Kendrick’s performance for me — and enjoyed a Seahawks win. Tonight’s request is Superbowl-adjacent, but not in the way you might think… let’s talk OSHA complaints!

OSHA — the Occupational Safety and Health Administration — is great in that they make some data available online about worker safety, employer violations and the like. (Good Jobs First is also great for this!)

But say you get injured on the job, and it’s definitely your employer’s fault. You might want to file a complaint and lodge a grievance against them by way of OSHA.

I love WPA-era posters. This one, created by Robert Muchley, was made in 1936 / Library of Congress

On that note… did you know that the NFL and other sports teams have their own NAICS code? It’s 711211. And we’re going to request for complaints to businesses with that code, like this requester and FOIA officer did on MuckRock for records about greenhouse employees:

🔗

So. Our request will target a few NAICS codes, including 711211 and 813990, which contains similar “sports associations” and “sports leagues” within it. Let’s grab all complaints within the past year, and see what that nets us:

- All complaints, grievances or reports filed to OSHA by employees for employers falling under NAICS codes 711211 and 813990 between 1/1/2025 and 2/8/2026. Please release documents in a .pdf format, and also release a list or log showing all complaints, related metadata and outcomes, if available, in a .xlsx format.

When it comes to filing the requests, I can send it in to the federal OSHA email for FOIA (foiarequests@dol.gov), but may also want to send it to the states that operate their separate OSHA programs (these!) — I’ve never actually filed from OSHA before, so it’ll be trial and error for me.

But! Because I’ve never filed for OSHA records, we have to grab the records retention and FOIA logs:

- A log, list, document or data to show all records requests filed with this agency (like a "FOIA log") between 1/1/2024 and the present. Please release documents in a digitized format and include a description of the request, the date of the request, the name or affiliation of the requester and the outcome of the request. Please release the document in a .xlsx or .csv if possible, or a .pdf if not.

- The most recent records retention schedule for the agency, which includes a list of documents kept by the agency and for how long each record is retained. This may be called a general records schedule, a records index, or something else. Please release this in a .pdf if possible.

This weekend is packed with requests, which I’ll file tomorrow morning so they can get processed. OSHA will take 20 days, but everything else should be less — 5 days? Hopefully?

Anyway! Full weekly update tomorrow with more details about where some requests are at. I’ll get some documents up into the DocumentCloud project tomorrow, too!

Cheers!

Cam
