florilegia #9: what's up, may 2025

Greetings from my hometown, as I’ve been in Florida this weekend for my grandmother’s memorial. I’m not quite typing this from the beach, but I can see the beach, so we’ll call it good. One nice thing about your parents no longer living in your hometown is that you finally have a reason to stay in a little room on the Atlantic.

three photos. L-R: a hand holding an iced coffee with a "Surfinista" logo in front of a wall of skateboards; a beach with a large sand dredging pipe visible; mirror selfie of D. wearing an aloha shirt and denim shorts.
the dream of the 90s is alive in Cocoa Beach

Let’s look at something else pretty. Well, something eerie and strange. Pretty is in the eye of the beholder, literally in this case:

cover for the zine Profane Sorcery volume 3, with author names David Simmons, Dee Holloway, and Sam Richard. the cover art features skeletal hands, several vultures, and a pair of large green eyes.
hell yeah???

Ah yes, it’s volume three of Profane Sorcery, which will include my short story “Many Hands.” No buy link yet, but check out volume two while there are still copies. Islandia Vice is indeed available for purchase, so show off some chest hair and soak in the elegiac neon vibes of this collection, which includes—nerd alert—a poem I wrote about the 2006 Miami Vice movie, one of my major obsessions.

Let’s link up:

  • Like everyone else on the planet, Sinners blew me away. Highly recommended, not least because I want to talk about it with everyone I know! If you’ve seen it and want to keep the vibes going with books, I suggest Ring Shout, Go Gator and Muddy the Water, and The Good House to start. If you’ve seen it and found yourself whistling “Rocky Road to Dublin” ever since, how about some Lankum?

  • Pretty obviously, I was a major Tamora Pierce kid (and continue to nominate her every year for the Empire State Award in my capacity as a youth services librarian). So I’m real chuffed that two of her series are getting the ol’ graphic novel adaptation, and that they’re really good so far! First Test came out last year, with art from Becca Farrow; Alanna: The First Adventure comes out next week, with art from Sam Beck. For all the little outdoorsy girls in your life and maybe also for you!

  • Getting anxious for the new Meggie Lennon album, out with perfect timing in June. I’ve been listening to the tracks already available on repeat while wandering the Australian pines and weirdly sticky sand of my youth this weekend.
