florilegia #29: what's up, march 2026

First things first: if you have some spare change, consider sending it to Trans Lawrence Coalition or World Central Kitchen, in light of the US government’s ongoing domestic and foreign terrorism.
Some nice recent news: fellow author Emmie Christie has been reviewing bodies of work from short fiction writers, and included some of my stories in her round-up! It’s a generous thing Emmie is doing, and rare for non-career writers to receive such engagement with their work. Follow along with this series and get into some new writers.
Some more: Bloodletter, a magazine in whose next issue I have a story, invited their contributor stable to review short films from India’s Wench Film Festival. I wrote a more of a response, and appreciated the opportunity both to watch Barlebas (a remarkable film) and to write something rather experimental. All the reviews are worth reading!
Speaking of Bloodletter, if you’re in the NYC area, check out their issue six launch party at The Twisted Spine later in March (plus a slew of other great events at Brooklyn’s new all-horror bookstore).
And now for the weather:
March is Women In Horror Month! Spend some time with this hashtag on Bluesky and find your next read or watch. Tangentially, Matthew Cheney on theorizing horror.
behold my latest blackgaze obsession, Ireland’s Domhain. I expect an even greater explosion of cool shit from Ireland in the coming years, considering their UBI-for-arists program is now permanent. Replace one letter of “Ireland,” of course, and get “Iceland,” another tiny country that’s always punched way above its weight due to checks notes funding the arts.
more music: new and very bonkers industrial album from talented musician and author Valkyrie Loughcrew.
I’m blessed, I think, in that my social Internet existence has mostly been migrating around various platforms with the same group of friends formed ~7-15 years ago. However, that means that sometimes I forget people newer to my sphere don’t automatically know things I consider core to my being, such as the fact that I will never touch any of this shit with a ten-foot pole. Just in case you had any doubt. Never ever.
it’s March, which means my newsletter archive is open! This is an easy way for new subscribers to look through old issues (and maybe scoop up some past freebies /eyeball emoji). If you’re enjoying this newsletter, please consider sending it on to a friend this month! I’ll be running a book giveaway on 3/31 for new March subscribers only.
