Improvathon All-Nighter 📎 the debrief

1. Laura, let’s circle back after the Improvathon All-Nighter, the 14 hour show, set in a 90s office. Did we hit our KPIs?
Yes, we did! We managed to stay awake all through the night and lost our minds only a little bit.
2. Can you walk us through some standout moments from the floor?
So many! Past midnight, the scene got interrupted by fireworks going off right outside, and that offered amazing opportunities for players and the storyteller to use that in the story.
Another moment that stood out was even deeper in the night: 2 scenes were happening simultaneously. One meaningful scene inside for the audience, and one funny scene outside (an outing with the team) just for the players and… The visitors of a nearby party.
I can name 20 more, but these I remember as ‘only in a marathon show’.
3. How was the vibe in the bullpen at 4 a.m.?
Some players described that they started dreaming with their eyes open while waiting to be called on. Basically, losing the feeling of what is real and what isn’t.
Guest player Christianna: “I walked in on David switching languages and realized: it’s probably weirder than I thought at this hour.”
4. Any office MVPs? Who went above and beyond their job description?
Our audience members, especially the nightly ones. Réka, who stayed the entire night, even joined us on stage. Our guest players who brought the energy up when the cast needed it most. All the volunteers for set, tech, bar, tickets, backstage, groceries, toasties, pictures, buildup and breakdown. All the players: actors, narrators and musicians. Our international friends who were on fire for the full 14 hours. And my fellow producer Gael, who did an insane amount of work to make it all happen for everyone.

5. On a scale from “Out of Office Auto-Reply” to “Fax Machine on Fire,” how chaotic was it?
Not as chaotic as we feared! Most players kept their character and the story well together, though the gremlins, the ‘only lower body dance’, and the meerkat principle gave this office a delightfully weird twist.
We gave ourselves the challenge of telling one story over 14 hours. Not easy, but so much up our alley as a theatre company.
6. Looking ahead: are we penciling in a sequel on the calendar?
Yes! We enjoyed collaborating with The Pretend Company (by Chris, and now also Liam) and will do a big, 50-hour Improvathon in June 2026. This year’s 14-hour one was already so memorable: I am excited for how epic the next one will be!
☀️
Talk soon,
Laura
P.S.
For the really ambitious improvisers, check out this year-long masterclass by Gael (90 hours of class with the same group). Starts in September, applications close soon!
