Behind-the-scenes: the dome, the photos, the adventure 🔥

Hey there!

We thought you might enjoy a little Behind-The-Scenes of our latest mainstage production.

In this email:

  • information about the show

  • what happened when a theatre geek met a photography geek

  • a peek into the dome (yes, the DOME)

And a P.S. on 🔥

Main stage production: Polar Nights

Winter is long, cold, and harsh in the far North, especially for polar explorers from the beginning of the 20th century. For months, they live together in an igloo on the ice cap.

What happens to them, overwintering in the dark, cold, and isolated North Pole? We witness their daily life, their comradery, their research, their struggles, their resourcefulness, and how to —barely— stay sane in the months-long darkness.

Are these researchers doing this out of a passion for unchartered territories, an obsession with being the first, or are they —frankly— a little mad?

Inspired by his artistic residency in the Arctic Circle, the director created this unscripted play to explore our relationship to isolation, the relationships we develop with our peers, and the ownership humanity has always felt over nature, even when we are doomed.

12, 13, 14 and 15th of December
Location: Treehouse NDSM - Pavilion, T.T. Neveritaweg 55-57 in Amsterdam (NDSM Area)
Tickets: € 17,50 Get your tickets here

With Polar Nights, Flock Theatre brings another signature immersive experience, featuring beautiful sound design, gorgeous visuals, and a life-sized igloo.

When theatre geek Gael met with photography geek Wesley

Did you see the (absolutely gorgeous) visuals for Polar Nights? The director Gael made them using an old-school technique called cyanotype printing.

That means: no digital processing. The photo shoot, the development, all of it was manual. (A very uncommon practice these days for posters)

To be able to develop it, Gael went to a dark room run by a guy named Thor (no kidding).

He also collaborated with photographer Wesley Verhoeve, who wrote a fascinating feature about it in his popular photography newsletter. You can read it here.

The results are hand-made, beautifully imperfect (look at them up close) and they mirror the actual historical pictures of that time.

With these visuals, we want you to feel a sense of the time of polar exploration. A time of adventure, hard work, and doing something for the pure love of it.

A peek into the dome

It is promising to be a beautiful show. See you there?

P.S.

Do you like glühwein and burn barrels? Polar Nights has that too.
