The Challenge of Missions Today

You are invited to our presbytery’s Foreign Missions Conference. The event is on Saturday, April 18, 10am-3pm, at our church. Dr. Ian Hamilton will speak on “The Challenge of Missions Today.” Lunch will be provided.

Please RSVP at the Conference Webpage.

Our church was planted by a missionary. Upon entering the ministry, Henry Coray went to Manchuria (Northern China). When the Second World War broke out several years later, Pastor Coray returned home and continued his evangelistic ministry by planting churches in California.

While he was still in China, Pastor Coray shared a reflection in The Presbyterian Guardian magazine. He marveled at the size and population of China and he noted the fine qualities of the people even without the blessings of the Gospel. He concluded with this thought:

Through all eternity we will continue to thank God for the privilege, the honor and the joy of bringing the Gospel of salvation by grace to these potentially great people. May He grant some of you young men and young women the blessed opportunity of serving Him out in this needy portion of His vineyard.

Some years later, our church enjoyed the ministry of another missionary pastor, Don Buchanan. Pastor Buchanan served here as an associate pastor from 1975 to 1979 when he took a missionary post in Alexandria, Egypt. After several years in Egypt, he became the OPC’s general secretary for Foreign Missions until 1991 when he returned to pastor this church.

The OPC’s next general secretary for Foreign Missions was Mark Bube, who in his youth had been a member of our church. Mr. Bube recently retired from that work.

All this comes to mind as we prepare to host our presbytery’s annual Foreign Missions Conference. Please join us! You can RSVP (no cost) here. Please also forward this email to friends who may like to attend. Everyone is welcome.
