Men's Theology Reading Group

Near the beginning of this year, we started a men's theology reading group. On Saturday mornings, for one hour, we have been meeting to discuss a chapter from Joel Beeke's Reformed Systematic Theology. It is a big book, but the chapters are only 20 pages and the writing is very clear and practical. So far, we have read 17 chapters, covering most of God's attributes.

Our discussions have been very informative and encouraging. The goal is to know God from the Bible so that we can reflect his character in our lives, our work, and in our leadership at home and in the church.

In the new year, we hope to make even more progress. The schedule (which is posted at https://firstopc.org/men/) will have us meeting 13 times in the first half of 2026. We will cover the doctrine of the Trinity, God's decree of predestination, his work in providence, and angels and demons. Our first meeting is planned for January 10.

This year, we intend to focus a bit more on the practical spiritual applications in each chapter (what this doctrine means for us personally), and also a bit more on praying with and for each other. You are invited!

A shorter version of the book was recently published, Essentials of Reformed Systematic Theology, which covers the same topics as the larger set of books. If you can’t seem to find time for reading, this book would be a great place to start.

Also, it would be great to have some teenagers join us. I have often thought that our teenagers should aim to read one book on systematic theology during high school. Joining our group would be a great way to accomplish that goal.

Reading theology is not the only way to grow as a Christian, but it is important because it is a way of knowing God better by understanding biblical teaching, which is relevant in every part of life.

In the words of the Prophet Jeremiah and the Apostle Paul:

Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24)

If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. (1 Timothy 4:6-8)
