València, 28th of July 2026

👋 Greetings, dear readers.

I’m sitting in a lovely coffee shop in my hometown, València, bathed in the brightness of the skylight above. The noise cancellation of my AirPods can’t quite compete with the clinking of cups and saucers from the bar, carried by the subtle murmur of conversation.

I’m enjoying a few days away from London and trying to put everything on hold for a bit. It’s time to catch up with friends and talk about things that have nothing to do with Playback Theatre or improv. Specially the later, I don’t want to talk about improv or its community for a while.

Of course, I’ll use this opportunity to get a new batch of local plays to bring back to London, so expect more of my comments on works by authors you’ve never heard of because they write in this little language called Catalan.

Talking about expectations, last week I started a new project that I can’t wait to share with you next month.

This week I will not hold you long with any topic. Just an invitation to take time for yourself, to breath, to get perpective, to recalibrate…

🎭 The Theatre shout out

It seems that lately I’m only talking about the East Asian theatre scene in London, but I happened to attend a showcase last week by New Earth Theatre at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Of course, I got to support friends while discovering East and South East Asian playwrights through snippets of their plays, performed by actors completing a week-long intensive. So, kudos to them, and kudos to New Earth Theatre.

A very inspiring experience.

📚 🎮 🎥 📺 The geeky dessert

Stephen King was one of the few authors I read growing up. Yes, I was a bit of a dysfunctional child. One of my favorite books was It, maybe because I connected with the main characters' ages. And yes, that problematic scene in the book was very disturbing (what were you thinking, Stephen?). If you know, you know.

Of course, I enjoyed the 1990s TV series (the VHS tape ended up worn out) and the most recent adaptation split into two movies in 2017 and 2019. Last week, I finished watching its prequel series, It: Welcome to Derry

Set in the early '60s, the series is ruthless and gory, and it doubles down on the terror, not only with the supernatural, but with the most terrifying thing (because it's real and sadly still going on): bigotry and racism.

As a fan of The Shining, another of Stephen King’s creations, I really enjoyed seeing the character of Dick Hallorann. Although he was only mentioned anecdotally in the book, in the series we get to know more about him and his relationship with this particular ability.

A good horror series to spend the summer. 😁
