#feministfriday episode 519 | Quieter, more complex
Good morning everyone,
How has your day been? Good, I hope. I hope you are looking forward to both the long weekend and the penultimate Fem Fri, which is this one.
Let's start, as we so often have, with an artist. I'm really enjoying the weird, rococo, artificial work of Jesse Mockrin:
Here is an interview:
Known for her copious research, Mockrin scoured traditional Western art for subjects applying makeup, which she found hard to come by. Instead, the artist uncovered various “scenes of toilette and women getting ready.” The resulting body of work—11 paintings in all, including a monumental, reflective diptych—incorporates mythologies around the depiction of mirrors and explores allegories of lust and vanity.

Scientists are another FemFriFave, and here's birdsong scientist Elizabeth Derryberry talking about how sparrows changed their little tunes in lockdown 💗:
Researchers studying birdsong in the San Francisco Bay found the sparrows' mating calls became quieter, more complex, and just generally "sexier" now that they don't have to compete with the sounds of cars and cellphones, says study co-author Elizabeth Derryberry. "It's kind of like going to a cocktail party where, as people arrive and it gets louder, you also get louder and you probably stop talking about philosophy, and you have more small talk."

Now here's Julien Baker singing Rejoice in Cologne. I love this song so much:
