#feministfriday episode 506 | Penguins
Good morning everyone,
Thank you for sending me great resources on women and jigsaws last week. Really enjoyed those.
This week, other than work I have basically been lying on the sofa watching Slow Horses, so there's not a Fem Fri in there I don't think. Instead, let's pay tribute to this woman penguin who is great at negotiating for what she wants (many thanks to the friend and subscriber who sent me this):
Now here's Dyan diNapoli, who loves and works with penguins, coordinating the largest ever penguin airlift:
What really surprised me was how unique each bird was in personality and temperament. Because they are colonial birds that often live in groups of tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands, I hadn’t expected each penguin to be such an individual. So, I was immediately intrigued, and knew that I wanted to stick around to learn more about them.

What's it like to be part of a record-breaking penguin rescue operation and can more be done to protect these much-loved aquatic birds?
Interesting question posed in this mini interview with four women who were selected to both run a post office and count penguins in Antarctica:
The 31-year-old from Hampshire said she could not resist the opportunity to work on the island. "Who wouldn't want to spend five months working on an island filled with penguins in one of the most remote places on the planet?" she said. As well as dealing with sub-zero temperatures and almost constant daylight, the women will share the island with a colony of gentoo penguins, which Ms Hilton will be in charge of monitoring.

The team will also monitor a colony of gentoo penguins on Goudier Island for five months.
Honestly I'm not sure that even on my most meeting heavy days I have wished to be running a post office in Antarctica! Hope it was great for them though.
Love,
Alex.
