#feministfriday episode 492 | Glassy
Good morning everyone,
I'm going to see Glasser this evening, so Fem Fri today starts there. Maybe you don't remember Glasser, she's an indie/electronic artist with an beautiful folky voice and great outfits who releases albums on a pretty languid schedule.
In fact this is the first album she has released in ten years, so maybe good to start with the music. Here's Easy:
I remember incredibly fondly going to see Glasser incredibly last minute with a friend - we went out to eat jugged hare, went to the show and then stayed in the venue and danced for ages after she'd finished playing. It was brilliant, actually one of the top week nights of my twenties.
Obviously a huge part of that night was also the jugged hare, which I searched idly this morning to see if there was any women/feminism connection. And NOT ONLY was it part of a cookbook published by a woman and intended for the common cook rather than cooks on grand estates, the woman who wrote it was called... Hannah Glasse! Really thrilled at this connection:
What set Glasse’s work apart from other “cookery” books of the time was the intended audience. Glasse hoped to reach cooks of the “lower sort” not well-trained chefs in grand houses. She purposely avoids instruction in the “high polite style” and eschews contemporary French terms in favor of more recognizable phrases, like “little pieces of bacon” instead of “lardoons”, with an emphasis on practicality and frugality.

Marinated for an extended twenty-four hours in a mixture of red wine, spices and fresh herbs, the dish has been updated by us to celebrate the hare's strong gamey flavour and suit the modern palate. The slow braise that follows locks in and intensifies these flavours and makes the jugged hare our most popular dish throughout the game season. Serve with creamy mash and some steamed greens for a fantastically hearty dish.
