Paris, France stands out for reasons beyond price
Late August thins the crowds and the price sits 70% under.
FareSignals
Paris, France is my answer to almost any question about where to go first. The last days of August are the best version of it: the terraces stay open late, and the museums are not yet running on autumn crowds. That is the trip I would build at $423. Amsterdam, Netherlands and Bari, Italy make a real case for staying on the continent.

💡 Travel Tip: On a daytime westbound crossing home from Europe, pick a right-side seat, since the sun tracks south of the route and stays off your window.
💼 Travel Essentials: A cafe table and a white shirt eventually meet, and a Tide To Go Instant Stain Remover Pen fits in a jacket pocket.
📱 Travel Tech: SNCF Connect sells high-speed rail tickets to Bordeaux or Lyon and Paris Metro tickets in one place, which keeps a week from becoming two apps.
Destination Spotlight: Paris, France
August empties whole blocks of Paris, France, and the last days of the month are when the city fills back in. Land on August 30 and you get both versions inside one week.
- Paris Plages lines the Parc Rives de Seine through August 30, and the Seine swimming area at the Pont Louis-Philippe opens at 8 a.m.; the official tourist office maps every site.
- Belleville climbs a hill in the 20th arrondissement, and the terrace at Parc de Belleville hands you the whole skyline for nothing, with the streets around it staying residential.
- Jazz a la Villette starts in late August across venues in the 19th arrondissement, a few Metro stops from the supervised swimming at the Bassin de la Villette.
- Thursday is the one night the Musee d'Orsay stays open until 9:45 p.m., and entry after six drops to twelve euros with the Impressionist floor noticeably thinner.
Insider Tip: Shops and restaurants still post August closure notices on their doors through the 31st, so check hours the night before rather than walking across the city on faith.
