[Famicom Party] Chapter 15, "Background Scrolling"

Hello!

I'm pleased to announce that Chapter 15 is now available. This chapter covers scrolling backgrounds, camera systems, and 6502 logical filters. I had originally planned to make this a much longer chapter covering level data storage and re-writing nametables while they are scrolling, but it turned out to be way too ambitious for a single chapter. We'll get there later, but not right now.

This chapter marks the end (for now) of chapters on the PPU and graphics. My next update will be a cleanup of existing content based on comments from readers, especially to fix issues with building projects on Windows. In the next chapter, we'll talk about NES controllers and how to read (and make use of) controller input. After that, I'm not sure what direction the book will move in. What would you like to learn next?

  • Collision detection?
  • Audio?
  • Expansion chips?
  • Random number generators?
  • Using the Zapper light gun?
  • Something else?

Please send me an email (kevin@famicom.party) and let me know your thoughts.

Until next time,
Kevin
