Fablehenge Timelines

Jen and I are excited to announce a feature we’ve been thinking about for longer than we’ve been thinking about Fablehenge: Timelines.

Timelines allow you to see an overview of how multiple tags relate to the scenes in your outline at the same time. Here’s an example with the three main characters from my current work in progress:

Three characters in timeline

These three characters are all tagged in most of the scene, but you can see gaps where I didn’t tag that character, either because they didn’t appear in that scene or (commonly) because I forgot to tag them.

You can select as many tags as you like in the left sidebar (which can be collapsed after you have finished selecting tags) and get a horizontally scrollable timeline in the matrix view to the right.

The matrix is interactive and you can add or remove a tag from a given scene with one click.

We envision a ton of cool use cases for this, including:

  • Keeping track of when and where specific characters appear together.

  • Managing multiple subplots, whether they are interleaved or happen consecutively.

  • Creating a beat chart to understand the emotional cadence of your story.

  • Quickly backfilling which existing scenes a tag appears in if you add the tag after they have been written.

  • and much more!

For more information, check out our blog article on the feature or the new documentation.
