Horror, or.. !?

B/w photograph of a grid with what could possibly be a dead bird, photographed from below.

What do you see when you look at this photograph? Do you see what [eye c] ? I mean, really - do you see what I see?

The funny thing with this place - between silos located just outside the centre of the town where I live, is how photogenic it is, all by itself. It’s like walking into a really large photograph, and all you have to do is pick and choose which parts to translate into actual photographs.

This particular view struck me quite hard. Partly because of what I think it is up there, partly because of the perspective from my point of view, partly because I so easily could see the grain, the grayscale, the contrast, even before I put the camera to my eyes.

While this may not necessarily be viewed as horror, I still think the question is valid. If nothing else, because of another question; for whom is what horror?

If you haven’t already, I can really recommend reading my book on Truth vs Reality, where I explore questions just like the one above. It is available in Swedish and English, and can be bought on Amazon all over the world.

If you really think about it, can you think of any agreements in society, that tells us what is horror, and why? If you do, please let me know, because I am curious. I am also writing my second book on photo theory, where stuff like such is very much a part of it.

Another thing I am very curious about, is how aware you are of whose said agreements are. Your view of what horror IS - is it formed by your own agreements with yourself, or was it forced upon you from parental/family opinions, or perhaps even a societal view of horror?

Regardless of which; I do invite you to take a close look at this photograph - and tell me if you do find it horrific, and if so - what it is that creates that emotional response in you.

And please, don’t spend your time too horrified of anything. Life’s too interesting for that.

Have a wonderful, c-ing day!

Best,
Sonya Malinka Persson
