Lots going on this week! ~ ExGld

We’re one week from the election (take this as your gentle reminder to vote) and often this time of year can be particularly stressful. With that in mind we have a lovely lineup up events for you all to engage in if you need a bit of joy and levity.

Driveway Follies - October 30th

This is one of Dr. Professor’s favorite traditions and if you have yet to attend, don’t sleep on this. It’s quietly become one of the best/worst kept secrets in Oakland and it’s still a magical experience for all. This year, Dr. Professor will be in attendance on Wednesday, October 30th arriving just before 9pm. If you find him (and you can always spot him wearing his jaunty hat) he might have a little halloween surprise for you.

Driving on Greenwood Ave isn’t allowed, so give yourself time to find parking and then walk to the performance location.

Social Dancer Badge - Nov. 2nd - 5:30pm

Have you ever been paused on the threshold of a bright dance hall full of music and movement but not crossed inwards? Has the lilt of a violin or the thrum of percussion ever moved you (or even just moved your foot)? Here’s your chance to join your fellow Explorers in dance.

This November 2, the Explorer’s Guild will venture into an Oakland dance hall and earn our Social Dancer Badge at this month’s Circle Left Contra Dance. Contra Dance is a gender neutral, beginner friendly folk dance. Rooted in the traditions of English Country Dancing (think Jane Austen) and Square Dancing, but lovingly curated for the modern dancer. The footwork is primarily walking, and every dance is taught with a walkthrough before we dance it.

We will meet by the Snow Park picnic tables at 5:30pm to cross the line in the sand and prepare ourselves mentally. Then proceed to the dance hall, where we’ll join the larger dance community for an introductory lesson. At the break (around 8:30) we’ll semper explorandum and award badges to those bold enough to cross the threshold with us.

  • Comfortable shoes (ideally smooth bottomed (think bowling shoes), but any shoe that is comfortable to walk in will work)

  • Water Bottle

  • $20 for dance hall admission (Circle Left accepts a sliding scale if you need it)

  • Light comfortable clothing

If you’re planning on joining, consider joining the Slack channel #1102-social-dancer

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you this week for our joyful offerings; and don’t forget, those that do take part in our Social Dancer activity can earn a badge!
