everything else: type of shit i've been on lately
dear internet,
a song comes on in a restaurant and you know all the words. a song comes on in the supermarket and you know all the words, and so does the stranger next to you, you’re both in the pasta aisle. a dog strains against its leash to say hello to you, a woman comes to stand next to you as you both watch a robin peck through the snow. the clementine peel curls around itself on your table, you leave it there for days, hoping it’ll scent the room, but instead it grows spots of mold. someone’s familiar laughter, or overhearing someone you love explain you to someone else. making your friend’s bed, cutting the tag off your friend’s sweatshirt, sitting on their countertop dangling your legs. the rain picks up and a woman stretches out her arms. the ice in your hair, the breeze in spring, the sun moving in neat squares across your bedroom wall. phone calls when you’re cooking, your neck at an angle as you chop your garlic and say mm, mm. you search words in your whatsapp chat, like poem, or pleasing, or period. the days are dark but they move towards the light, a year will end, a year begin: every year this happens, and every time you’re surprised.
love,
t
