everything else: reported speech
dear internet,
on a very hot day—the first truly warm day of the year, my hair heavy on the back of my neck—i walked past a woman saying, on the phone, no, it’s not about free will. the drunk girls on my street were looking for a friend, laura, laura, laura, they chanted uselessly, laughing until i closed my window, and probably after. the teenager across from us on the train discovered mid-journey that he had misplaced his keys and immediately called his mother to tell her; i’ll look again, he promised before he hung up, and then it turned out he did have them after all, so he called her back. someone in a talking heads t-shirt at the next table in a café said the goofy movie, before participating in an extended conversation about bourdieu. my coworker at the café, twelve years younger than me, told us that she’s old, like a grandma. while looking at t-shirts in a tk maxx my friend said, i think we’re the last of our kind.
love,
t
