dear internet,
every time someone sends me a work email that starts off with happy new year! i roll my eyes, and also every time someone says happy new year! on a microsoft teams call with an eyeroll in their voice i think, well it is a new year you can at least be sincere about it, and every time someone says it's a new year fresh page new starts! i viscerally shudder, and every time someone says does it even feel like a new year i am meryl streep in the devil wears prada, going, cynicism about the new year? groundbreaking.
it rained all day yesterday; apparently the most january rain this city has seen since 1915. it dripped into the house and i decided to wash my hair so everything retains a sensation of dampness. it's really only a new year according to one calendar; more will follow in the next few months as everyone recalibrates their version of time. in delhi the day after the first new year celebration you can shrug off your outermost layer and trust in the promise of spring. i find myself thinking a lot lately about delhi, a city i despise most of the time i am living in it. i updated my phone for the first time in three years and can finally see the emojis i have been pretending to see all along, when really i have been using (often minimal) context clues to decipher a box with an x in it. i am still waiting for anything to feel different.
