everything else: fetch the bolt cutters

dear internet,

this week,

i’m thinking about: how even now i am so susceptible to influence; wondering if i should buy bananas so i can make banana bread, if i'm somehow doing quarantine wrong because i'm not focusing on getting abs or whipping coffee. how strangely difficult it is to deprogram this way of thinking.

i watched: two deeply delightful episodes of lois and clark: the new adventures of superman. the first episode of mrs america, which gave me so much cognitive dissonance as someone who wants to enjoy cate blanchett’s face, as i deserve; it was a slow episode but a good one, the five minutes that rose byrne was on screen were very promising, and i plan to catch up this weekend. a while ago i also finished, but forgot to mention, feel good, a weird quiet not-exactly-feel-good comedy that i watched all in a day. it’s difficult to describe, but i recommend it.

i listened to: my first fiona apple! did i mention this last week? (what’s a week?) in case you're wondering i think my favourite are i want you to love me, under the table, the way she says ladies LADIES ladies LAdies, drumset, and the line "i spread like strawberries / i climb like peas and beans".

i cooked: potato the way my mother makes it: chopped small with the skin on, and then fried with just salt, chili powder and a little bit of cumin. also, when i first moved out of college i used to make what is, in hindsight, the world’s most terrible salad. it was grapefruit and sausage. i thought i was a genius. this week i made a better version, with grapefruit, cucumber, spring onion, mint leaves, strawberries, and a soy sauce-vinegar dressing, so i guess that's growth.

i saw: the collapsed version of the outside world. every night i sit in my balcony, absent-mindedly slapping mosquitoes on my bare legs, and look out at my street hungry for anything that has changed. yesterday a couple playing badminton on the street and a cat sitting compactly tucked into itself on a nearby roof.

i hope you're all doing okay and your workplaces aren't making you do themed outfits for your zoom calls. i'll see you next week!

love,
t
