This is Think Like A Journalist, a newsletter about journalism - from the mainstream and the margins - and also containing journalism.

It’s written by a former writer and editor on The Financial Times and The Sunday Times.

I’m interested in the variety of pressures that cause people to want to put something “out there”; and how they do it. I’m less interested in writing about whatever topic happens to be trending on Twitter.

To me, journalism starts with somebody writing in a journal, whether or not they intend to be published (Samuel Pepys, Anne Frank, you…?). And it takes a huge variety of forms. Not just the obvious columns, news reports, reviews and colour features but also (especially in places where it’s dangerous to practice conventional journalism) stage plays, poetry and fiction.
