Nikiphoros Lytras, Kalanta (Carols), oil on canvas, 1872
Merry Christmas. I am sending you this beautiful painting of carol singers. It is by the Greek painter Nikiphoros Lytras, an artist from Tinos who trained in Athens at the School of Arts and then at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. Alongside Konstantinos Volanakis and Nikolaos Gyzis he is one of the finest Greek exponents of the Munich School. His work is characterised by naturalism, historic subjects, portraits and the chiaroscuro style. Note the signature at the bottom left of the painting: Ν. ΛΥΤΡΑΣ.
A small early Christmas gift for you!

Historic Brixham
This (NB. after the book cover) is a beautiful print of historic Brixham, Devon from our The British Isles in Colour: South West England and the Scilly Isles.
The British Isles in Colour: South West England and the Scilly Isles | Lone Fox Publishing
A new series of books showcasing Photochrom photography, an early type of colour photography that brings to life scenes from an era that we usually visualise in black and white. The technique was mainly used for postcards and as a result the photographers concentrated on subjects of interest to the visitor and hopefully the recipient of their card; beautiful locations and the seaside are natural favourites, but also historic and civic landmarks, social scenes, parks and train stations. First in the series: South West England and the Scilly Isles, featuring the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset.
Photochrom image of Brixham c. 1890-1910.
